Hmmmm. I read this with surprise and some dismay.
I am sorry your experience of the selection event wasnt how you planned.
I can understand that you are dissapointed but the content of this thread probably goes some way to explaining the reason you didnt progress.
I,like you, entered the room knowing nobody and i engaged with everyone to an equal extent, showing an interest in everyone there. Through chatting to people i know that only 2 people actually knew each other and cant recall them monopolising anything. To the the contrary i thought most, including yourself, participated. what went wrong? not for me to judge but there must have been something. I hope you sought feedback.
The point of the exercise, as previously mentioned, is to simply display your ability to interact with others effectively - have an opinion,show an interest in others opinions etc.
If anybody was giving dirty looks I believe the assessors would not tolerate this. (home straight away!) Do you then suggest these so called looks somehow seemed to pass by six experienced people staring intently at us?!?! Not a chance! Your previous post from when you were there suggests you felt a little out of your depth. You shouldnt of. you had as much chance as anyone there. this situation requires a positive approach and you may not have demonstrated this.
You can read as much as you like as to what you should do in these situations. You can 'know' how u should perform in a group exercise. Doing this, however, is a very different thing alltogether. I have been there before. my first group session was a nightmare.
also, just because you know alot of the railway does not immediately qualify you, or for that matter, make you suitable as an employee. (I have an interest in cricket yet on no level am i suitable to pad up and play professionally) It simply means you want it more and are more dissapointed if it doesnt work out. unfortunately there is nothing that you know that couldnt be learnt, as required, by a good candidate.
To come away from the event and vent your anger on here referring to people you know very little about as obnoxious shows an amount of immaturity and a poor attitude to others. certainly not something any employer would want. not entirely sure who you were referring to btw. ive met alot of people and dont believe anyone in that room today could be described as that!
I made no judgement towards anyone on the day and approached others not as competition but as people with whom I had something in common with and even new friends. this again may not have been your approach.
My advice, pick yourself up, brush yourself down and take the experience to better yourself for the future. If you want a career in the rail industry you can get there. Just approach it in a different manner and you will make it a ton easier for yourself and someday i may bump into you doing a job u enjoy!
Oh and by the way no-one found out whether they got the job today. No welcome to the company banner. no presentation of the red jacket. everyone get the same response-we'll let you know in a couple of days. realisticly most of us are going to wait only to be dissapointed. welcome to the real world. it sucks
