Virgin Trains on board shop

Apart from sandwiches can anyone give an idea of what is usually on sale in a Pendolino shop and what sort of prices they charge.

Crisps
Chocolate
A selectrion of hot and cold beverages
Burgers
Bacon baps.

I got a bottle of Coke (500ml), ham and cheese panini and a mars bar for £5.50.

Drinks - at least two lagers, bitter, cider, soft drinks and all normal hot drinks.
I've seen some unusual microwavable things like cheesy mash before too!

They also have a few newspapers and magazines.

I saw that before thanks. I found it too generic as it just says things like 'Hot Snacks' without giving any idea of usual products or price range.

Yeah there's a couple of paninis on sale, a cheeseburger, and porridge pots (just add hot water).

Better than last few journeys I made then a couple of years back where they had no microwaves for warming food, counter staff explained it was because they didnt have enough spare electrical power to run the microwaves.

BUT - on a certain memorable Caledonian Sleeper journey from Fort William, I was advised by the staff to buy a microwaveable meal from Morrisons (just across from the station) pre-departure - and they would gladly heat it up for me, they even put it on a plate! This was because they had got no food stock that evening - I've often wondered if other TOCs would have any objection to heating up an independently purchased microwaveable meal once their own stock had run out?

You can heat it by any means (unless you're scared of radiation) theres always a danger of overheating or congealing the milk though.

That's correct, and that's what Virgin will do on board at least. They'll provide a jug of hot water for the passenger to heat the milk themselves.

Microwaves on trains tend to be very powerful industrial ovens.

The website advertises a meal deal for £3.95 as well though, but I presume this will have no hot option. Presumably a pre-packed sandwich, bag of crisps and a bottle of drink? Could someone clarify?

Although it does say "sandwich+drink+snack" but doesn't state hot or cold.

Well, it's not as cheap as the on-station outlets such as Sainsbury's or Boots (although they are cold food only), however you do expect to pay something of a premium onboard.

It's not as much as Ryanair charge on their flights - now they are eye-watering prices.....

Travelled on VT today the offer is:

Meal Deal £3.95

Any cold sandwich or hot snack (Cheese burger, Panini, bacon muffin or Porridge) and a 500ml cold soft drink.

Add 50p extra and you can choose 1 of the following walkers crisps, doriotos, kit kat, mars, snickers, bounty or twix.

Good value really I had a cheese burger, crisps and coke.

Nothing to do with 'radiation'. Microwaves are just a kind of radio wave and don't stay in the food when you switch off the power. Microwave energy is nothing to do with radioactivity.

The actual reason you shouldn't heat baby milk in the microwave is because microwaves do no heat food evenly and you risk burning the baby with very hot milk.

As for virgin trains, I was disappointed that the pannini's are microwaved. KFC or Burger King for me next time.

At least VT still have the proper coffee machines. I see that EC have taken theirs out and replaced them with the traditional hot water tea urns... Reminds me of the old British Rail Maxpax coffees in the 70s and 80s that were always too hot to carry! (Anyone else remember those?)

Point 1) I know that, you know that, but the world is full of stupid people... I know plenty of people who don't use microwaves because they genuinely relate it to the stuff at Sellafeild.
