Virgin Trains Diverts

Having looked on Real Time Trains a few weeks ago, I read that Virgin's London - Carlisle services where being diverted via Manchester on the 19th April, however looking again on Real Time Trains today, Virgin are not diverting through Manchester on the 19th April. I'm I reading this wrong or have Network Rail cancelled any engineering work that they were planning on carrying out on the 19th April?

Interesting that nothing appears to be coming of at Colwich either.

They are diverting via Chat Moss on the 20th (Easter Sunday).
Nothing going further than Penrith as far as I can see, but late on there is some freight and the Highland Sleeper to Edinburgh also diverts.

For that matter- nothing's off at Norton Bridge either, everything is going via Crewe.

According to the ATW's site, there is work still planned in the Warrington area from 11am on Saturday 19th April, presumably involving the Acton Grange-Winwick Junction section for them to be diverting trains:-

I agree - I just wonder if the two-track section between Ordsall Lane and Manchester Piccadilly, and platforms 13/14 at Piccadilly could handle this traffic on a permanent basis?

For it seems that the northbound VT services are using the path through Piccadilly right through to Parkside Juction that normally the x50 ATW to Llandudno would occupy, were it not diverted via Stockport.

I don't know the actual length of platforms 13 & 14, but it seems VT are confident that at least a 9-car Pendo will fit, as they are advertising a stop this time, rather than their passing through non-stop[and the Pendos being dragged] as on previous occasions.

Were it to be made a permanent routing, I would be a little concerned about extra passengers being funnelled on to and off this, at present, single island platform. It can already get very congested with x37 Liverpool trains, being followed very closely by x46 Blackpools and then x50 Llandudnos, and that's just at the 14 face!

It would use one of TPE's paths between Wigan and Manchester under a merged franchise. Yes there would be sufficient paths available, especially considering MAN is gaining to more through platforms.

That still isn't set in stone, I would still have a fiver on 15 and 16 getting value managed out of the scheme.

There is a slightly longer route via Newton Li Willows that is wired but in the long term it will return to Bolton route probably as that route will be up to 15 mins shorter by 2016.

I'm in little doubt the platform is long enough. The question is; has a Pendo ever stopped at P13 or 14 in Passenger service before?

Back when Virgin ran trains north from Piccadilly, the first Glasgow on a Saturday was a pendolino+57.

I'll be dispatching these Pendos off 13 and 14 during this time! Don't like the narrow platforms up there and the blind spots. Thinking we'll need at least 3 people on the dispatch because of the curved nature of the platform

All seemed to be working OK today (diversions after 1000 Saturday and all day Sunday).
Unusual seeing hoards of London passengers at P13/14, all looking rather confused.
Most trains were Pendolinos, but at least one Carlisle-Euston was a double Voyager, packed to the seams (seat reservations not working...).
I was surprised to see a Mossend-Daventry Freightliner also on diversion via Manchester, with a class 92 in charge.
It must be the biggest usage for the new Chat Moss wires since they went live.

The diagrams were asymmetric:
Euston-Trent Valley-Crewe-Manchester as normal
Birmingham-Manchester-Carlisle
Carlisle-Manchester-Crewe-Trent Valley-Euston
Manchester-Birmingham-Euston

Massed orange suits and hardware visible at Winwick Junction, getting ready for the blockade.
I was on the last Chester-Manchester on the normal route.

Ive noticed this

Manchester to Euston departs at xx:27 in the place the XC to Bournemouth would depart but once the xx:27 gets to Wolverhampton it stops for 12 mins and allows the XC to overtake which is now timed to depart Manchester at xx:35. Why is this? Why couldn't the Manchester to Euston just depart at xx:35 instead and save on the 12 minutes wait at Wolverhampton?

It's an off-course Scotland-Birmingham-Euston really, starting from Manchester.
It picks up a Scottish path at Crewe, which waits at Wolverhampton for the old EBW path via New St to kick in.
XC are also diverting via Crewe today/tomorrow.

I'll be on the 0929 Wigan North Western to Euston tmrw. Nice trundle around the Midlands for a lunchtime arrival into the smoke.

The 1751 to Carlisle has just departed from P13... where all the London passengers were waiting for their train about 3 minutes after it turned up... chaos!

I was on the 10:28 Wilmslow to Carlisle (07:43 from London Euston) which was formed of an 11-car Pendolino and alighted off at Manchester Picc.

I have to admit, it was rather nice to see a Pendolino in passenger service on Platform 14. Although as starmill says, it was chaos as there were passengers waiting for the upcoming TPE train to Blackpool North and were a few delays for other trains too.

Coming back, i got the 13:02 to London Euston on Platform 13 and was formed of 2 x 221 Voyager units (221142, 221107).

To be honest, it would be nice to see this as a regular (or peak) passenger service but at the same time I can see why they try to avoid doing this route. Shouldn't really be a problem once Platform 15/16 are built at Picc.
