Probably something to do with the fact they can use onboard facilities during the journey. I have known many conductors a tad p'd off that even though we are on the same diagram, i get relieved but they don't.
That's a condition they would have sold at some point since privatisation though, isn't it? Okay, maybe some of the staff around today wouldn't have been in the job at the time giving up PNB's at PNB points was sold but the company will say it was a legitimate contract negotiation. Out of interest what does a TM earn on Virgin? I presume it is up at the high end of what TOCs pay guards.
