When i passed Ilford depot yesterday morning i saw an old Virgin liveried mk3 carriage sticking out from behind an EMU on the furthest track away from the running lines. This was at the Romford end of the depot.

I couldn't see a number but could quite clearly make out the 'Virgin' logo so i'm guessing the number on this side was on the other end being obscured by the unit. The paintwork appeared to be very patchy as far as i could tell. Almost as if it has been used to trial out different shades of colour or something.

Does anyone know the identity of this piece of stock?

Also any info as to why it is there?

Many thanks

hi, i pass ilford quite alot and yes there are virgin mk3 coaches stored there.
they used to be used for the virgin relief services (in case a pendolino broke down or they needed an extra service)

the old mk3 were spilt up when they were no longer needed, so some have now gone to the greater anglia franchise (ilford) and they will be used at a later date if they have a mk3 coach fail, the ex viring stock will replace the faulty coach.

AFAIK, when ONE got VT's old Mark 3s in 2005, some coaches were used as spares donors instead of being refurbished. These are those coaches.

They weren't used as the Virgin relief service. WB64 (or the Pretendalino) is still in tact, based at Wembley. The ones at Ilford transferred over when 'one' moved onto Mk3's.

Those coaches are ex NXEA coaches that are off lease. They are at Ilford as they were used for the Mk3 C4 overhaul, which has now been completed.

If there is a coach failure, the ex Virgin ones most definitely won't be replacing the faulty coach. The Mk3's at Ilford aren't fit for very much now. There's spares at Crown Point to replace coach failures.
