Shares in FirstGroup sank to new lows last night after it emerged that the train and bus group had fallen out of the running for the East Coast Main Line, one of Britain’s highest-profile rail businesses.

In a long-awaited decision, which could be announced as early as today, Virgin Trains has emerged as the favourite to land the route between London King Cross and Edinburgh. If it does win the franchise, it would mean that its shareholders control all the intercity railways north ogf London...

The Times reporting First Group are out of the running this morning.

Confirmed by the DfT
East Coast franchise awarded to Inter City Railways, a consortium of Stagecoach and Virgin.
Intercity Express Programme train
Rail journeys between London and Edinburgh will be transformed by more seats, more services and new trains after the government announced its intention to award the new East Coast franchise to Inter City Railways, a consortium of Stagecoach and Virgin, today (27 November 2014).

The new deal will include a host of extra benefits for passengers:

23 new services from London to key destinations, with 75 more station calls a day
plans for new direct links to Huddersfield, Sunderland, Middlesbrough, Dewsbury and Thornaby
proposals for more trains to London from Bradford, Edinburgh, Harrogate, Leeds, Lincoln, Newcastle, Shipley, Stirling, and York
3,100 extra seats for the morning peak time by 2020
across the entire train fleet there will be 12,200 additional seats – a 50% increase
65 state of the art Intercity Express trains brought into passenger service from 2018, totalling 500 new carriages
journey times from London to Leeds reduced by 14 minutes, and from London to Edinburgh by 13 minutes
a £140 million investment package to improve trains and stations.
View the individual station benefits on our interactive map.
Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin said:

This is a fantastic deal for passengers and for staff on this vital route. It gives passengers more seats, more services and new trains.

We are putting passengers at the heart of the service. I believe Stagecoach and Virgin will not only deliver for customers but also for the British taxpayer.

This government knows the importance of our railways. That is why they are a vital part of our long term economic plan, with over £38 billion being spent on the network over the next five years.

Martin Griffiths, Chief Executive of Stagecoach Group, said:

A passion for customers, employees and the community is at the heart of our plans for the franchise. We want to build on the quality and pride of the people who will be joining our team.

We have some fantastic ideas to deliver a more personal travel experience for customers. Investing in the committed people who will make that happen is a big part of our plans, giving opportunities for them to develop and grow into more senior roles. At the same time, we have developed major programmes to help young people, communities and small businesses along what is one of Britain’s major rail routes.

Over the 8-year franchise, Inter City Railways will invest £140 million to bring extra benefits for passengers, including:

complete refurbishment of the existing train fleet
better wi-fi connections and onboard catering on the new Intercity Express train fleet
improved ticket offices and 170 new ticket vending machines
over 500 new car parking spaces
411 additional cycle spaces and new secure cycle facilities
a customer and community improvement fund
a training fund for new apprenticeships, internships and staff development.
East Coast infographic.
The new services announced today have only been made possible thanks to the government’s significant investment in the railways. Over the next 8 years Inter City Railways will pay the government around £3.3 billion to operate the franchise.

The company will shortly begin talks with Network Rail and the Office of Rail Regulation to agree its plans to run new direct services from London to Sunderland, Middlesbrough and Huddersfield.

It will also seek approval to run more trains to Edinburgh, Leeds, Lincoln, Shipley, Stirling, Harrogate and Bradford.

From 2018, Inter City Railways will take delivery of the new Intercity Express trains, to be assembled at Hitachi’s factory in Newton Aycliffe, County Durham. By 2020 all of the 65 modern high-speed electric trains will be in service and will replace 39 existing trains.

In addition to more seats, passengers will benefit from cleaner, more reliable trains and faster journeys. The new franchise will provide regular journey times of 2 hours to Leeds and 4 hours to Edinburgh.

Inter City Railways has also given a commitment to reduce all long-distance standard anytime fares by 10%. This could save passengers travelling from Edinburgh to London around £15 on those journeys.

The operator will also develop its own website, smartphone and tablet apps that will make door-to-door travel easier for customers, including planning journeys and buying tickets.

Inter City Railways is a joint venture comprising Stagecoach Transport Holdings Ltd and Virgin Holdings Ltd. It will take over the franchise from Sunday 1 March 2015.

Following the announcement, and in accordance with usual procurement practice, there will be a standstill period of 10 days before the department will be in a position to enter into, and complete, the formal contractual documentation and make the award to Inter City Railways.

as someone living in the south who's from the Stirling area, the prospect of more through services to Stirling excites me. Now, if they could have a Peterborough stop, I'd be very happy.

Of course, we don't know if First or Eurostar/Keolis would have promised the same

I should think this will be merged at some point but Virgin/Stagecoach have won the East Coast bid.

Stagecoach and Virgin win East Coast mainline rail franchise

A consortium made up of Stagecoach and Virgin has won the franchise to run the East Coast mainline rail route.

The firms promised to invest £140m in the route over eight years, and will pay the government £3.3bn for the contract.

The franchise, which covers the route between London and Edinburgh, has been publicly run since 2009.

The RMT union called the return of the franchise to the private sector "a national disgrace".

Other companies bidding to win the franchise included FirstGroup and a joint venture between Eurostar and French firm Keolis...

Just announced Stagecoach/Virgin consortium got it. Hopefully they won't get West Coast now

I suspect they will spend even more time effort and money on the West Coast bid considering the cash cow that it is. They wont want to lose it.

Checked out their interactive station map on the DfT website and Stirling is not only getting IEP but one extra morning service to and from London.

Stagecoach-Virgin Company Awarded Intercity East Coast Rail Franchise
£140m planned investment to deliver an improved service and more personalised travel
Over £25m planned spend in improving stations and car parking
New trains and faster more frequent services
Investment in staff with more training and new dedicated innovation council
New technology to improve customer experience on-board and at stations

Stagecoach Group ("Stagecoach") today (27 November 2014) welcomed the announcement by the Department for Transport ("DfT") of its intention to award the Inter City Railways ("ICR") venture with Virgin Group ("Virgin") the InterCity East Coast ("ICEC") rail franchise which will bring major benefits to passengers, taxpayers and employees.

Passengers can look forward to new services, faster and more frequent journeys whilst taxpayers will benefit from significant increases in premium payments to Government over the course of the eight year franchise.

The groups’ venture, ICR, will transform the customer experience for around 20 million journeys a year on one of the UK’s major inter-city rail routes, blending the experience, culture and service-focus of both Stagecoach and Virgin. Stagecoach holds 90% of the share capital of ICR and Virgin holds the remaining 10%.

The new franchise will start in March 2015 and is planned to run until 31 March 2023, with the option for a one-year extension at the DfT’s discretion. It includes a commitment to deliver £2.3bn* in real terms in premium payments to the Government between 2015 and 2023, providing a higher return to the taxpayer than under the current arrangements.

The franchise is set to see more than £140m invested in delivering an improved service and a more personalised travel experience for passengers. Trains will operate under the ‘Virgin Trains East Coast’ brand. Highlights for customers include:
Faster journey times – regular services to Leeds in two hours and Edinburgh in four hours
New trains – 65 new ‘Super Express’ trains from 2018 with an early multi-million-pound train refresh programme for existing fleet
Better connections – extra and new direct services to London from key locations in Scotland and England and more weekend services
More services – a 50% increase in capacity by 2020 with total fleet capacity increased by 12,200 seats
Better value fares – 10% cut in Standard Anytime fares on long-distance journeys to and from London and Stevenage
Investment in people – a fresh approach to recruitment, including new apprenticeships and the introduction of a new National Academy for Rail Professional Education with bases in York, Derby and London. Major investment in staff development and training, a new innovation council and giving employees ways to own a share of the business through employee share incentive arrangements
New technology – new website, smartphone apps, interactive touchscreen information points at major stations, portable technology for staff, free WiFi on trains and stations.
Personalised travel – journeys built around individual customers, with at-seat food ordering, simpler ticket purchase and reservations, new Nectar loyalty programme
Improved customer rights and support – new Passengers' Charter with easier and faster compensation for customers through automated delay repay service; commitment to improved satisfaction scores with new independent passenger surveys, benchmarks and published results to drive satisfaction with stations, trains and customer service; and a dedicated customer and communities improvement fund
Station enhancements – planned investment of over £25m in stations and car parks with new open plan customer zones introduced for combined ticket purchase and information, more car parking spaces, extra cycle facilities and improved security
Improved accessibility – investment in disability improvements, including induction loop and tactile station maps
Community engagement – apprenticeships for young people, graduate and ex-offenders programmes, dedicated communities fund, support for small businesses and regeneration in disadvantaged areas.

Martin Griffiths, Chief Executive of Stagecoach Group, said: “Passengers using the East Coast mainline will benefit from hundreds of millions of pounds of infrastructure investment and service improvements over the next decade. Together with Virgin, our innovative plans will give customers new services, faster and more frequent trains, and easier, more personalised journeys.

"We will be investing in the committed East Coast people who will be joining our team, as well as delivering major programmes to help young people, communities and small businesses along one of Britain's most important routes. We will match world-class customer service by giving a big boost to taxpayers with increased payments to Government."

Patrick McCall, Senior Partner, Virgin Group, said, "We’re delighted to have been chosen to run the East Coast franchise. Our long term partnership with Stagecoach has seen a revolution in customer service standards, great product innovation, reduced journey times and improved timetables on the West Coast mainline. We plan to deliver similar success on the East Coast and are looking forward to working with the team there to build on their achievements.

"Our partnership will concentrate on areas for which Virgin is famous, such as looking after our customers and our people. We have a great opportunity to blend the successes of the East Coast and the West Coast lines to create a great experience for all. Together with these new ideas and initiatives, passengers will begin to see those Virgin touches on each and every journey."

Detailed plans to transform services for InterCity East Coast passengers include:

New, improved trains and enhanced on board service
65 new Super Express trains introduced from 2018 delivering a new standard of on-train service with free WiFi and at seat meals for all passengers
£13.4m planned spend in the first two years of the franchise to improve the existing train fleet. An initial deep clean of the entire fleet, with refurbished toilets, new carpets and seat covers, new and clearer on-train signage, plus other enhancements.
Faster, more reliable on-board WiFi and better mobile phone connections
"Luggage Hubs" providing an airline style approach with a secure storage area on long distance train services where customers can leave their bags during their journey.

Hopefully they have some good things planned for the ECML. I can't really fault DOR, so now the line's back in private hands there can only be improvements otherwise the decision just demonstrates that privitisation doesn't always win the day.

Did they inform the East Coast Staff ahead of the public announcement?

So much for the Eurostar hype. Was hoping they would get it, so am disappointed. Wonder if we will see details of losing bids??

No mention of through trains to Scarborough, which I thought would feature.

Why would they do that?

Big win there for Virgin/Stagecoach. Wonder what their bidc entailed and what it will mean for the WCML when that comes back up for sale.

Brilliant news for Middlesbrough. Devastated it won't call at Eaglescliffe! Wonder if a even bigger ticket office is now required at Thornaby for the future.

So we lose the rewards scheme and get Nectar points. Oh well.
No mention of Hull in the blurb. I assume maintaing the daily direct service is part of the franchise.

So stagecoach essentially have a monopoly on intercity routes going north out of London.

The Telegraph has an interesting twist on the news:

The Telegraph said:
Stagecoach and Virgin have pledged to cut journey times between London and Leeds to 14 minutes and London and Edinburgh by 13 minutes.

Those new IEP trains must be fast!

The more accurate version runs:

DfT said:
journey times from London to Leeds reduced by 14 minutes, and from London to Edinburgh by 13 minutes

Good news - Extra trains, extra destinations, faster journeys & no mention of Pendolinos.
Bad news - No more free first class trips on rewards scheme.

I'd like to know more about the 'at-seat ordering' of food. Hopefully more like the old East Coast at seat dining with a proper menu available when you want it.

And more generally - privitisation was supposed to improve service through competition, yet we have the same company running trains on both routes to Scotland.

At-seat food ordering. Interesting, I reckon this will be a smartphone app-based menu, payment, enter your seat number system. If this is the plan it would revolutionise on-board catering and would work with the IEP kitchen / no buffet counter layout.

So the OP was right and the city-watchers (and the Daily Express) wrong.
They kept the lid on till the end.

The new routes will have to go through the ORR for access approval, so not completely guaranteed.
I should think Sunderland will be reached via Newcastle (no mention of Hartlepool).
The next flash-point will be the ORR judgement on the proposed Alliance services on the ECML.

And if that picture is remotely realistic, then either the train shown is full of dwarfs, or there's going to have to be a lot of bridges being raised to accommodate the new trains!

"Scotland" is not one place; Glasgow and Edinburgh are separate destinations, and the east and west coast routes serve largely different communities, with little overlap in England and not much in Scotland. In any case the main competitors are air and road.
