(Note: don't try to use geographical references on LU, as the staff may get confused and tell you off I once was asked where I am going to, at Putney Bridge, I said north to Willesden Jn, changing at West Brompton, and was sternly told "you mean Eastbound!" Try asking for Northbound from Finsbury Park to Cockfosters and a similar conversation may occur!)

We need to adopt the much more sensible Paris Metro / RER system of saying "Direction ( end of line station name )" - but that's for a separate debate.

In all fairness to Virgin the loading of the trains leaving London in the morning peak is because the Dft specifies a level of service that is many times that required by the demand.

This has always been the case going back to BR days.

This is the only explanation I had been able to make, other than some reference to DB trying out variable pricing and their core business clientele being really upset by it. However, you can still have fixed open tickets and drop the price outside the busiest time for advance purchase.

However, if this is a legacy issue from BR days (and I've heard same about 1st class, but I know there's another thread on that) - then why doesn't it apply to busier commuter routes in and out of London. Is it just an "Intercity" legacy?
