I have the above via cable on the lowest tariff - ie speed.

Were I to trade up to the top tier - ie fastest would I really notice a big difference.

Or is it more down to other factors such as my Old Laptop and the time of day.

I don't want to needlessly spend money, I don't download music or films but sometimes use I Player.

Thanks:p

The Virgin broadband speeds up to 30Mb (the latest XL package) are reduced during peak time, there are also restrictions on the amount of data that are downloaded, so if you download a lot then you will find that they reduce the speed and the amount you can download.

There are no restrictions on 50Mb (the fastest package - shortly due to go to 100Mb for free).

But unless you have a gigabit router and wired network you will see little benifit from anything over 30Mb/s especially if you're using a wireless network, you won't see anything over 20Mb/s noticably on your network. It all depends on what kit you're using.

You can just about stream 720p over a 10Mb/s network connection, but agian, it depends on what you want to do with your network. I'm on the cheapest VM connection and I don't find that it limits my use of the internet for anything, and I play some pretty heavy games on my network it's more about ping speed than headline throughput.

What network are you actually running at home and I will be able to let you know if it will be of any help to upgrade your WAN connection, chances are it will make sod all difference for the normal internet user.
