Virgin first class journey

Hey! I'm going to be traveling on the virgin service from Leeds to Aberdeen. It leaves Leeds at 7.10 and doesn't get into Aberdeen until 13.00. Will I just be served the breakfast menu or will I get lunch too?

The exception is if you're travelling at a weekend in which case the food offer is much less substantial.

You'll likely get breakfast after leaving Leeds, there will probably be a crew change at Newcastle, so there will be another food offer between there and Edinburgh. There will probably be another serving north of Edinburgh as well. My experience of Edinburgh to York has been food service leaving Edinburgh and a second one following a crew change.

I was lucky enough a couple of years ago to get the lunch menu served on departure from York, followed by the all day menu (sandwiches) immediately on departure from Newcastle after a crew change.

The train offers breakfast South of Edinburgh, and the All Day Menu North of Edinburgh, which means you'll get your breakfast after departure from Leeds and an early lunch after departure from Edinburgh if you're going all the way to Aberdeen. I find partaking in the complimentary alcohol helps numb the experience of Aberdeen somewhat.

You will get both, as passengers traveling from South of Edinburgh to stations North of Edinburgh are entitled to both, and will get both. Enjoy your trip - certainly usually very good service on the Edinburgh to Aberdeen leg.

There's no separate lunch menu. The rest of the day menu includes the sandwiches and hot food.

There used to be a sandwich only afternoon tea menu but thankfully it's now gone. The mid morning (cut down breakfast) menu has also gone and the full breakfast menu runs until 11am.

As already mentioned those travelling north of Edinburgh are entitled to another meal on this part of the journey, but as mirodo discovered you may also get offered food north of Newcastle too if the crew had changed there.

Leeds crew normally take the train to Edinburgh then another crew take the train to Aberdeen IIRC.

It's grey and quite dull. And in the winter it is very dark, miserable, and foreboding, with frequent bad weather.

Grey, miserable, dark, nothing to do unless you enjoy getting plastered, surrounded by people who seem to thrive upon their own misery. Lived there for a year, hated every moment of it.

I travel this train fairly often, most recently last week. And the answer is, just after Haymarket. The Scots crew are happy to ply you with booze and by 11 it's acceptable if travelling for leisure in my book.

As mentioned, the OP will receive a breakfast, usually just after York and then at Edinburgh the service changes to the 'All Day' menu where hot and cold options are available, usually served just as you cross the Forth bridge.

This is one of the best journeys you can do on VTEC IMO, the only thing that could spoil it for you is a 'crew shortage' scenario which will mean the catering offering is curtailed.
