Virgin Rail has been appointed by the US Congress transportation and infrastructure committee to advise it on the possible privatisation of the high subsidy but Amtraks most lucrative 457 mile North East Corridor between Washington and Boston. Virgin are interested in possibly bidding to operate it should it be privatised.
Congress and Republicans in particular are looking at the privatisation as a way of financing the future high speed lines and are introducing a bill to transfer the line from Amtrak ownership directly to Government ownership as a first stage. Amtrak is against itself being broken up and is looking towards private markets to raise the money itself for the 210mph high speed line.

Bill Megginson, professor of the University of Oklahoma and author of “Privatisation Barometer”, a yearly report, said: “The principle of opening up Amtrak to private capital is very sound. It seems wise to bring Virgin in to consult on US passenger rail privatisation.
“The British rail privatisation of 1996 is widely perceived to have been a failure initially, though most problems were worked out over time under private ownership. Since Virgin is a big provider of rail services in the UK, it should be able to discuss both the promises and pitfalls of private management of passenger rail.”
