Hi all,

I've had this lamp for a while now, I really like it.

I was just wondering three things, they are:
1. Why does the top open up?
2. What is the space for in the under the top opening part?
3. What is the glass lense (unfortunately cracked) for?

If you could help me with these queries that would be great!

It's a brakevan sidelight.
Back in the day of unfitted and partially fitted freight trains, brakevans carried sidelights, white facing forward, red to the rear. They helped the footplate crew see that they still had a complete train amongst other things. I can't remember the regulations now, but I think there was an instruction that on multi track sections the off side light should display white to the rear. That is what the slide is for as it would be interchangeable with a red slide.

Why the top can be opened I don't know.
