How comes they are able to state if a train line is delayed and how comes other lines don’t announce train delays.

This is controlled by the Line Information Specialist in the Victoria line’s Service Control Centre (SCC). The S Stocks can also display requisite information which is set in the SCC at Hammersmith.

Whilst this is true, I rarely hear status information on the S Stock, where as I hear it most of the time on the 2009ts

That's down to different procedures across different control rooms. The guidance given to Line Information Specialists regarding onboard RTI messages largely depends on the line. Some lines don't have the capability due to older stock types, whereas others it's simply not the done thing.

It's useful, but unfortunately the system is completely over the top in terms of implementation. Hearing "This District Line is operating with SEVERE delays. The Piccadilly Line is operating with SEVERE delays. The Northern Line is operating with SEVERE delays" before, during and after every single stop gets very irritating very quickly!

I just realised with newer trains all this information is on the displays instead

It would make much more sense if instead of line by line, they grouped it by disruption, so it would be "The District, Picadilly and Northern lines are operating with SEVERE delays. The Windrush line is part suspended. The Waterloo & City line is CLOSED."

After all, when announcing interchange, it doesn't go line by line saying e.g. "the next stop is King's Cross St Pancras. Change here for the Circle line. Change here for the Metropolitan line. Change here for the Hammersmith & City line. Change here for... ".

Instead it combines those announcements all into one: "Change here for the Circle, Hammersmith & City, Metropolitan, Northern and Picadilly lines, National, International and Intergalactic rail services ".

Well indeed but the change her announcements are static. I presume what is happening is a "severe delay" announcement is made for each individual line and the system isn't sophisticated enough to combine them on the fly.
At least it's intelligent enough to stop the torture once the relevant interchange has been passed.

To be quiet honest the tube is at its best when the automatic announcements on the train aren't working for whatever reason.

Does the system not have to announce the reason for the delay hence the lack of groupings? No such reasoning exists re interchanges.

For the first time ever the other week/last week, I heard "The Circle, Hammersmith & City and Metropolitan lines are operating with severe delays". I've not heard this type of grouping before, it made me stop and listen and sure enough, it was repeated at the next stop. The system doesn't always have to annouce the reason for the delay although it does sometimes - I've never quite worked out the logic of when it does and doesn't announce the reason.

The only similar grouping I've heard before that was "Circle and Hammersmith & City lines are severely disrupted" (note 'severely disrupted' and not 'severe delays' - this is the same phrasing used to say e.g. "National Rail services from Tottenham Hale are severely disrupted").

I would be led to believe this would be set manually. I'm not sure what system the Vic line uses, although if it's similar to the one we use on the Picc, The LIS sets the station(s) and direction(s) they want the messages to be broadcast at. The Picc system only works for stations as the 73s don't have the capabilities to receive and broadcast status messages, although I would assume it's much the same on the Vic albeit with added functionality.

The on-train Vic system is much more intelligent. Whilst certain messages do have to be loaded by the LIS, the system knows when to play them (or not).

Whilst I'm inclined to agree with you from the point of view of noise pollution, it certainly makes life a lot harder for people like myself when they are not. I personally really liked the original wording on the Elizabeth line auto announcements, sadly, tfl have chosen to rescript these and make them more lengthy. In recent updates, I suspect that what we probably need as a nation is a basic protocol of what format announcements should take and how many of them there should be and at what length, etc. At least then we have consistency on every bus from caith nest to Cornwall and every train from WIC to Penzance

The format used on London buses is perfectly adequate along with maybe a few interchange announcements, but again keep these short
