To reduce the risk of accidental or 'non-delibrate' activation, same reason there are two door open buttons.

It also allows a more secure or 'safe' circuit to be formed as part of a round train system with monitorin relays by virtue of two buttons (and therefore two sets of button contactors) being provided.

Thanks.

Are the trains AC or DC and how does the ATO know when to stop?

The first question there is a bit of a difficult one to answer so I can say...

Traction Supply: 600 - 820V DC, Four Rail, Floating Earth.

Supplies:
Traction Convertors
ACM (Auxillary Convertor Module)

ACM Produces 400-415V 3 Phase AC, and "110V" DC (Actually closer to 122V) this 110V DC supply also charges the batteries, this is housed in the '12' or B car.

The ACM supplies at 400V: (List may not be complete)

Compressor (B Car Only)
Air Drier
Cab HVAC
Ventilation
3pAC Bus Line (To feed between units)

The 110V DC Systems operate all other axillary systems, including control, lighting, radio, doors etc.

The motor convertors produce variable frequency, variable voltage 3 phase AC to drive synchronous prerminant magnet AC motors, two per bogie on each A, B, D and D1 car. These are only fed when the associated shoegear is live.

They also provide rehostatic and regenerative braking back directly into the 630V DC traction lines.

With regards to ATO, the train 'knows' where it is.

The simple answer Nym is that the supply is DC ("4th rail" system) but the motors are AC...

Modern stock always have AC motors. Cheaper to maintain and more powerful for their size compared with older DC motors.

It's not just the 09 Stock; every LU train with Automatic Train Operation (including the now-withdrawn 67 Stock) has two ATO Start buttons.

PS: I've just moved this thread to the correct forum

Although techinically 2009TS has four ATO start buttons per cab; (Two pairs).

same for 67 stock, would the 67 stock been the first and only train for a long time to have the door controls on each side of the cab, as left doors on the left side of the cab, and right doors on the right side of the cab only?

All '72mkII, '73, '83, '86, C, D were built with door controls only for the respective side in the cab for operating by the Guard.
