Viaduct at Buxton

Hello everyone,

I've just visited Buxton for the first time and couldn't help but notice the rather splendid viaduct at the North end of the town. It appears to carry a freight branch and I was wondering if anyone had managed to go over there, either as train crew or on a tour. Also, does anyone know of any planned special workings over there?

If I'm thinking of the right one it's the old Midland line that went to Millers Dale/Matlock, it's now a freight only route from Peak Forest. Railtours do occasionally use it.

Thanks folks,

I think the old Midland Mainline to Peak Forest runs away behind the viaduct. As far as I'm aware the line over the viaduct itself used to join up with the old Cromford and High Peak railway.

If its not the old Millers Dale line, its the old AShbourne Line which is still in use as far as Hindlow for stone traffic.

When it was open it was the highest line in England.

A stretch of the line used part of the Cromford and Hiigh Peak

Cheers for the info - yes that's the one. I dont imagine it gets many passenger trains these days!

Correction ! What about Stainmore, at 1370 feet ?

Quite possibly the Dowlow branch is now the highest in England still open
