Via Stansted

Good evening, making a journey to London from Cambridge on friday, is it valid on an open return to Upper Warlingham to go XC to Stansted then the express?

I can't find anything to suggest otherwise; it is perfectly valid (if somewhat slow) on NRE, while the Routeing Guide suggests that Stansted Airport is actually on the West Anglia Main Line and not on a branch! I've done Cambridge to Stansted Airport via Stansted Mountfichet before now, so I don't see why using the Airport station as a diversion would be a problem either.

But do note that the Stansted Express isn't really worth it; the FCC route is both faster and nicer, and has better trains on it (in my opinion anyway). You're too early to sample a 379 on the route as well, so that benefit doesn't apply.

Cheers mate, I know it's longer but I go to KGX week in week out in most cases, nicer stock than the 317s for sure but just fancied a change tbh! I travel from St. Neots so south of Hitchin I know the route to well. Just wanted to check the express didn't have specific tickets like Hex.

Yep that's fine, Stansted is shown on the WA as its Stansted Group... I'm doing the reverse (albeit then travelling further back to Norwich on Sunday (XC BUS subsitution tho!)

I have a vague memory that at one time Cambridge - London tickets were routed NOT STANSTED AIRPORT

Even if that memory is true, it's no longer the case

I'm pretty sure that timing works out so that taking XC into Stansted and Stansted Express out means you'll almost certainly be overtaken by the Cambridge-Liverpool Street service that departed Cambridge later.

Cheers for the replies, and thanks Jopsuk I'll bear that in mind if I'm pushed for time. But as always I have plenty of time on my hands on the outward journey and not the return, so I'm planning to take a relaxed journey and go and enjoy a slightly obscure route!
