On friday, while I was waiting for the (delayed) 0755 to KGX, there was quite a few people there already. Returning home last night on the 1625 ex STP, there was still about 10 or 15 people there just vegging....

Yes, but remember, some of those people may just be there for 30 mins or so while waiting for a train, which IMO doesn't make them 'Veg', only so if they stay there all day/are there nearly every day...

Some of the Donny regulars sit in the middle of platform 4 all day, despite the fact most things pass behind platform 4 :???:
Or some have set days, such as the 'Dolly Parton' man as I nickname him, who comes every tuesday from Hebden Bridge and has a habit of talking to me while I wait for my train, the nickname stuck because he told me he 'met Dolly Parton and went to her Texas ranch'

A man of taste - lineside spots are far more interesting, and you don't have to be worried about random members of the public, chavs etc.
And 158s are decent units!
