Various Questions About Excesses

Hi all, I have a few questions relating to certain excesses.

Firstly, can a travelcard from a station outside London (e.g https://www.brfares.com/!faredetail?orig=NRW&dest=EUS&grpd=0035&rlc=YNG&tkt=ODT ) be excessed at all, or is it considered a "multi journey ticket"?

Secondly, if I wished to purchase a change of route excess, is it possible to excess a super off peak ticket (keeping the time restrictions) to a different route for which no super off peak ticket exists? And if so, would the appropriate change of route excess in one direction be half the difference between the super off peak fare and the cheapest fare by the different route.

Thank you in advance... Apologies for being slightly vague on the specific tickets involved.

@Shotton. As regards the excess on the Off Peak Norwich -> London Zones 1-6 travelcard, what sort of excess did you have in mind? Something on the far side of the London zones, such as an Off Peak Day Return from Boundary Zone 6 -> Gatwick Airport, perhaps? Or something else, before you enter (or after you have left) the London zones, such as Manningtree->Harwich Town?

We need to know a bit more about your intended journey and the ticket held.

Generally speaking you can do a change of route excess from a Super Off Peak to Off Peak but excesses can be difficult to obtain and you might have to shop around.

Sorry, I probably should've used an example closer to what I was actually considering doing, but I didn't know if it was potentially unintended.

I was thinking of excessing a (super) off peak day travel card route via X to an any permitted one in a single direction.

Or alternatively, simply a super off peak return route via X to an any permitted route where a super off peak return only exists for the route via X.

Though the question of over distance excesses combining with a travelcard seems very interesting, thank you for the response!

Edit: in further reply to @Hadders, the tickets have not been bought yet but I would be looking to buy a super off peak day travelcard from Shrewsbury routed via High Wycombe ( https://www.brfares.com/!faredetail?orig=SHR&dest=EUS&grpd=0035&rlc=YNG&rte=305&tkt=SOT ) and excess it in the outward direction to an any permitted travelcard, the cheapest being https://www.brfares.com/!faredetail?orig=SHR&dest=EUS&grpd=0035&rlc=YNG&tkt=ODT .

If this is potentially sensitive, please delete the thread anybody who can.

Thank you!

You can't get an overdistance excess on a Travelcard. That is Boundary Zone tickets are for.

Well that answers that curiosity, thanks.

Does your answer about super off peak to off peak excesses also apply to travelcards?

An example of a change of route excess from one ticket type to another.

Say you hold a London Terminals to Birmingham Stations Super Off Peak Return valid via High Wycombe costing £38.20
You want to travel back to London on the return using Avanti via Rugby you can excess the return half to an Any Permitted ticket. There is no Super Off Peak ticket routed Any Permitted but there is an Off Peak Return costing £69.00

The excess in one direction costs half of the difference between the two fares which is £15.40.

There is nothing in the NRCoT - or elsewhere in public-facing materials - that says outboundary Travelcards can't be excessed. Accordingly the normal rules as specified in NRCoT 9.5 apply; if you travel via a different route than specified, and/or at a time when the time restrictions apply, you simply owe the difference to the cheapest valid fare.

The "half the difference" method of calculating excesses in one direction isn't referenced in the NRCoT, so strictly speaking I don't think you'd have grounds for complaint if you were charged the full difference.

But any difficulties that staff may have in excessing your ticket (e.g. because of any restrictions on excessing Travelcards which might be imposed by their ticket issuing systems) wouldn't be your fault or responsibility, and wouldn't change the contractual position.

Thank you - I will shop around and see what I can obtain before travel.
