What are the valid routings for Edinburgh Airport Bus/Tram to somewhere else west of Edinburgh tickets?

The ticket description says that you should change at Edinburgh Gateway in/out of the tram

The route tag on BRFares is VIA EGY TRAM

The forum ticket website offers a routing via Haymarket, which is AirLink 100 according to the Lothian Buses timetable (which doesn't make any sense as for one it's clear that it's Trams only)

And funnily, even with a avoid Haymarket, I can't get it to give me an itinerary changing at Gateway.

LNER likewise offers EGY (Edinburgh Gateway) but will let me put a VIA Haymarket and spit an itinerary but doesn't offer mTicket fullfilling.

Can I use such ticket on Trams from the airport down to Haymarket, break my journey there, (have a fry up , hire a bike), and go to North Queensferry later? Or am I forced to use Trams to Gateway and then continue my journey there (which would be very inconvenient for me)?

Or can I use the Trainsplit itinerary with a ScotRail purchased ticket and go my way through that way?

If you want to view the bridges from North Queensferry.. in my opinion the views are better from the southern side.

I would recommend buying a Lothian day ticket (TOTO £5 or on-bus at £5.50) and travelling to South Queensferry via Gyle. You can use it on any Lothian bus in the 'city' area except the 100 Airlink. https://www.lothianbuses.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/250907-LB-Network-Map.pdf

In regards to rail connections, don't worry about it not generating an exact itinerary for the times that you want (it might not have up to date tram timetables stored in the data). It's an anytime ticket so it is valid on any bus/tram connection via EGY on that date.

If you want to view the bridges from North Queensferry.. in my opinion the views are better from the southern side.

My goal is to have a fry up in Haymarket then either hire a bike from Edinburgh (and take it on the train) or walk, haven’t decided yet. Walk/bike the Forth road bridge from North Queensferry, peatdraught walk, past the dalmeny house and down to Cramond, return the bike or bus after

My question is whether it is valid to go as far as Haymarket on the tram and back out of it like Trainsplit and LNER say, or whether you need to change at Gateway obligatorily like ScotRail says.

If there is a forced change at Gateway, I’ll just walk to Park&Ride from airport and get the Tram to Haymarket there

For what it's worth, the ScotRail website (not known for being completely accurate) says:

Edinburgh Airport
There are several good options to get you to and from Edinburgh Airport, combining the train and local public transport.

Services to / from Edinburgh
Edinburgh Trams
Change at Haymarket, Edinburgh Park or Edinburgh Gateway for the Edinburgh Trams service to Edinburgh Airport.

If you are travelling on Edinburgh Trams or Lothian Buses, combined Airlink tickets are available – allowing travel by train to Haymarket or Edinburgh Waverley then onward travel by bus or tram to Edinburgh Airport.

I'd not expect you to have any problems using your ticket on the tram (if there is an on-board ticket inspector, they will inspect your ticket shortly after departure from the airport, and will not check where you alight).

You're unlikely to encounter any difficulty entering Haymarket railway station; if the ticket is rejected by the barrier, show it to the ScotRail staff member at the barrier and they will almost certainly let you through.

Thanks both. I think unless there are some more people weighing in postively, I won't risk needing to argue my way out of paying a new ticket, just going to walk to Park&Ride and pay normal fare to Haymarket then a single to North Queensferry

There is indeed a TVM at Edinburgh airport, just round the corner from the Sainsbury's Local store at the arrivals door closest to the tram / airport express bus stops.

That is indeed the best option, and also found out there was one at Glasgow Airport as well

The Dalmeny House/Cramond walk is lovely! We did it with some Edinburgh-based friends a couple of years back (at this time of year too) using busses to/from Edinburgh. Hope you have a splendid time
