Bit of a teaser, it’s quite easy to buy a ticket from an online retailer and say you have a railcard of some description when you don’t. So, do I need to have a valid railcard when I buy the ticket or on the day of use? My thought is that my railcard has expired, but I want to buy an advance ticket that is cheaper with the railcard, so can I buy the ticket now saying I have a valid railcard when I don’t, but buy the railcard sometime before the day of travel for the ticket to be valid?

Once it's valid when you travel it works.
That said back in the day at stations some clerks wouldn't sell discounted tickets with seeing an in date railcard.
I wrote "PTO" please turn over and a note on the back.

It's fine to buy a railcard discounted ticket without holding the relevant railcard - it's having the railcard when you actually make the journey that matters.
You just need the Railcard when you're travelling on the discounted ticket. Buy it whenever you like.
Many ticket offices do still require presenting the actual Railcard when purchasing tickets from the ticket office, though I've often not had an issue when I've explained why I'm buying a Disabled Persons Railcard discounted ticket for immediate travel when I don't have a Disabled Persons Railcard. Depends who you get and what policies they choose to use discretion on.
