Validity Code 2V

Apologies if in the wrong place - but this seemed most appropriate.
Can anyone shed any light on this code - 2V?
My daughter told me she had bought an open return WKF to BRI but now says it's not valid at the weekend only Mon-Fri (return portion) as it has code 2V.
It is clearly not an open return (as I understand them), but I thought as weekday trains tend to be more expensive this seemed odd top have a ticket which was not valid at weekends but was OK in the week.

2V means valid after 0930 Monday to Friday or valid at anytime at the weekend.

Assuming it's an Off Peak Return it's valid anytime at the weekend.

Being pedantic, there's no such thing as an Open Return although some ticket website erroneously still use the term. The ticket type formerly known as an Open Return is now called an Anytime Return.

The restriction information at nres.co.uk/2V could be interpreted as meaning the ticket is only valid from Monday to Friday, to someone unskilled in interpreting these things...

Possibly someone who has misread http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/2v, because it doesn't explicitly state 'No restrictions on Saturdays or Sundays' but that is implicit as the restriction only applies on Mondays to Fridays.

Sounds like the passenger I overheard at a station today saying she got a cheap ticket from the trainline.

It's a stupid restriction applied generally by Cross Country to their fares. In effect as they haven't always put an Anytime Return fare on flows with a 2V Off Peak return restriction it means you have to buy two singles to complete long distance journeys with overnight stays at a reasonable time. Arriva TOCs in general are often a pain in the backside ticketing wise.

It's perhaps noteworthy of their attitudes that they have even applied it to their Aberdeen to Penzance tickets. I'm not sure if you can get to Penzance if you leave it until 0930 to depart from Aberdeen...

You certainly can't use that ticket on the direct service, which leaves at 08:20. But you can on the 09:52 VTEC service; changing at Haymarket, Wolverhampton and Birmingham NS, arriving into Penzance at 22:41.

(In the reverse direction, it's the 10:00 FGW service; changing at Plymouth, Birmingham NS and Haymarket, arriving in Aberdeen at 23:12.)

I doubt that XC are too concerned about the revenue from the Aberdeen - Penzance flow.

Just like normal everyday passengers don't know or care about revenue flows. They just buy a ticket. They probably assume the train company they travel on gets all the money. Thats the ones that don't think it's all still British Rail

They've all* got the same 2V restriction though, so it applies to all of those flows.
