Valid routes Didcot to Weymouth?

Hi,

Thinking of taking the train to Weymouth for the day during half-term so say 1st November.

Could someone tell me if an off-peak day return is valid via both Bristol and Basingstoke/Reading to enable a bit of a circular day tour? Or would the journeys need to be booked as specific singles out via one route and back via another?

The £50 CDR route 'Via Basingstoke' is not valid via Bristol. It's valid via Basingstoke, Reading & Southampton.

The £50.50 CDR route 'Via Westbury' is not valid via Bristol you can travel Didcot - Swindon - (optionally via Bath -) Westbury - Castle Cary - Weymouth, or Didcot - Reading - Westbury - Castle Cary - Weymouth.

You should be able to use the £50.50 CDR via Basingstoke also.

Note that a Didcot - Swindon CDR is £10.30, and a Swindon - Weymouth via Yeovil CDR is £16 (this is cheaper than Westbury - Weymouth via Yeovil!).

This combination of tickets would be valid Didcot - Bristol Parkway (direct) - Weymouth, or Didcot - Swindon - (optionally via Bath -) Westbury - Weymouth

You obviously could not travel via Reading on this combination.

Looking at the mapped routes, with a hypothetical ANY PERMITTED ticket, you can go:

BL+WE - Didcot - Reading - Westbury - Castle Cary - Weymouth
MW - Didcot - Reading - Basingstoke - Southampton - Weymouth
MW+WE - Didcot - Swindon - Chippenham - Westbury - (Bath Spa optional) - Castle Cary - Weymouth

None of these routes allows travel via Bristol.

If you want to go out by one route and back by another, you can buy a return for the cheapest route, then get a change of route excess for one portion only, which costs half the difference between the cost of both return tickets.

There are separate Didcot to Weymouth return tickets:

via Basingstoke
Off-Peak Day Return £50.00 (Railcard £33.00) (M-F not before 0900)
Anytime Day Return £53.00 (Railcard £35.00).

via Westbury
Super Off-Peak Return £50.50 (Railcard £33.35) (M-F not before 1030)
Off-Peak Return £64.00 (Railcard £42.25) (M-F not before 0850)
Anytime Return £156.00 (Railcard £102.95).

To travel outward by one route and return by the other, buy a ticket for the less expensive route and prior to travel buy an excess fare at the booking office. It costs half the difference to travel by a more expensive route in one direction only.

Thanks for the replies. I think I'll probably check the weather first and drive to Swindon for the 09:31 and go via Bath/Westbury. Much the cheapest option! Basingstoke can wait...

I like the 'Bath Spa optional' bit.
Try going that route (Chippenham-Westbury) without going via Bath Spa, you'll find your options rather limited.
