Valid journey? Anytime return, returning train after midnight

Dear all,

I have a quick question. I have an anytime day return between Hereford (HFD) and Cathays (CYS) valid for today. I would like to ask a question about whether my ticket is valid to travel on the 0030 return train from Cardiff Central tomorrow - i.e. the day after the ticket was bought.

I seem to remember that this might be allowed, if travel ends before either 2am or 4am, or something similar. Is this correct?

Using the NR journey planner, I think the journey would be valid between CDF and HFD, since the latest train shown from CYS is 2331, therefore the next train CDF --> HFD is the 0030.

Is this correct?


Finally, does anyone know what stock is used for this route?

Day returns are valid the following day as long as all travel on the ticket is finished by 04:29 AM, unless the ticket's restriction code says otherwise. This is true even if you start your journey after midnight.

Yes - you're fine. I frequently take the 00:59 from Newport to Hereford on a "previous day's" ticket, which is the same train I think.

As above - the ticket is valid until 0429 the next day - this counts as part of the previous "railway day" (although a ticket bought after midnight would count as starting in the new day, if that makes sense).

Stock would be 175 between Hereford and Cardiff, 142 or 150 Cardiff-Cathays.

EDIT: according to opentraintimes that CDF-HFD service is booked Pacer.

The train will be deserted tonight - lovely and quiet. But I suggest avoiding it on Friday nights - it's always packed with partygoers and nicely coated in fresh vomit.

Edit: Stock is usually a 150 for that train, but I've seen pacers as well.

Nope. My employer used to have 26h30 days used in internal timetables and they're now longer.

TfL travelcards are valid from 0001 on day one to 0429 on day 2 - and if you're traveling on a bus that's the boarding time so if you got the 0420 N89 from Trafalgar square you could use it to 0536. The disadvantage is you'd be in Erith by then.

That's the theory-in practice I had an off-peak one-day travelcard which would not work the barrier at Victoria at 00:10 on a Friday night/Saturday morning and had to get a member of staff to open the gate.

So it was valid in practice as well, it just wouldn't open the barrier?

Just as an aside, FGW will accept day returns bought he day before on the 0358 from Swansea to stations to Cardiff. It's partially to avoid confrontation with the party animals going home from the clubs, if they have a return from the night before.
