Is this route more scenic and worth the detour from the direct coastal line?

if it is ''more'' I cannot really answer for you.
Its different in views-dry, tipical Spanish inland, long stretches without any change or visual attractiveness, vs. coast=more of that.
It also really extends your trip time a lot-though you can use the HS-line (expensive) Zrgz-Barca-from HS out you also see hardly anything.

Will stick to the 0910 ALV5490 Madrid-Valencia-Barcelona train then, gives a decent arrival of 1440 for a bit of sightseeing.
