I was curious as to what this was and to my unskilled mind set it looks like a trained guard who sells tickets on what is is otherwise a DOO train. Am I wrong?

Sell tickets on DOO services, assisted travel, step off at each station to look for any assistance required. Basically a guard without PTS and you don't control the doors

Could be "amusing" if they step off to provide assistance and the driver closes the doors and goes - I realise it would not happen as their uniform would stand out but it tickled my sense of humour.
Sorry:D

They have a special key for that stops the driver locking them out. Has caught a few people out when the driver 'accidently' closes the doors when the OBS hasn't pit their key in

No worries. I just wanted to be clear. I would not advise mentioning DOO in an interview for the role.

OBSs are definitely not guards in any way. The vast majority cannot really fulfil any of the guard duties in the Rule Book. Better described as a "competent person" in some matters.

The uniform does not stand out on camera.

Sort of. The key activates the steward's panel, and the basic principle you've stated applies - but the driver can still close the doors if they believe the associated warning message is spurious. Which has happened...

It may not do, but OBSs usually only work on DOO trains. This is not any sort of hidden fact.

Out of interest, this job therefore is not safety critical?

Nobody seems to know how to describe the OBS role. Although OBSs are not deemed 100% necessary for a train to be able to run, they do intervene in some safety situations when they are provided (eg. doing security checks onboard) and they could well need to take the initiative if a driver was incapacitated, so they do have some safety requirements.

Did you read the job spec as it includes assisting driver in emergency if trained

Indeed. The level of training has varied considerably over time...
