I'm away to Doncaster for testing on the 14th. Dreading it! lol

I'm pleased there is 8 places to start with, hopefully that will improve the odds a little in getting in. As long as I pass the testing stage.

I have been watching the trainee drivers on the metro the past few weeks and the train I get into work always seems to have a trainee on-board, its been fascinating watching them with the the door open and seeing what its all about.

Any inside info on the experience would definitely put my mind at ease.

Are they still going to be doing the big interview bit at the end?

I'm starting to get the hang of the group bourdon test stuff, but its still very tricky! lol

I asked at interview how many people they wanted, and ideally they would like enough people for two intakes, one June and one 6 months down the line, so hopefully increased chance of getting job.

Advice for the tests, practice as much as possible, i would expect the interviews
to be in, i did not prepare for that part, i concentrated on the tests.

My understanding is Group Bourdon test is mistakes count against you, they are looking for speed and accuracy here, in other tests that are multiple choice wrong answers do not count against you, so if in doubt take a guess. This proved crucial for me as i passed mechanical comprehension by one point, i believe mechanical comprehension has now been removed from tests, but i would check that out, don't take my word.

Getting back to the interview, perhaps keep in mind the scenarios you used previously, i sometimes go to bits in interviews, they helped me through at Doncaster, by the time you get to that stage they have to make allowances, its a tough day.

If you get to lunch you doing well, and a bet you don't eat it, i like my scran but was too nervous to eat.

So once again, good luck, practice as much as you can and you'll be fine. Hopefully we'll all be in training in June.

well guys i aced all the tests at doncaster all the hard work payed off they grade you borderline-pass-good-very good i managed three very goods and one good.

and yes there is a final interview which was very hard mine lasted 1 hour 15 minutes six off us went down and three passed.

now just hoping for a medical then a job offer fingers crossed.

Congratulations, what a nightmare to be interviewed so indepth after all the tests, its changed a bit since last year then, the interview was fairly low key for me, i scraped through mechanical comprehension by one point, that sticks in my mind, i believe that part is now scrapped ? Feel sorry for the three that did not pass at that stage, thats rough.

Not exactly good preparation. At least coming from South Shields you should know quite a lot about the Metro without doing any research in the first place.

Did they mention anything about the new depot that they were apparently going to build at South Shields - would save a bit of time for you instead of clocking on at the depot or South Gosforth each day?

Well I feel a bit more prepared now.
I have Been Practicing the Group Borden test every day as well as the SCAT just to keep the brain in tune.
On the psychometrics side, I think I've just about got my brain working full swing in connection to the memory recall test.

the dials and cable test doesn't sound too bad, I've mastered the dials bit, but not sure what to expect from the cables part of that test, not much on the internet about it.

The reaction test has me worried, I've mastered bop-it but not sure if that's going to help. I have a computer game called Heavy Rain on the Playstation and that has parts were you got to react to stuff on the screen and I fail miserable most times lol though it is a pretty good game.

The interview side I'm not too worried about, I'm a train nerd so know lots about DB regio and the Metro service, and have lots of situation based examples etc for possible question to be asked.

An interesting off topic thing I discovered during my research, is that Thales, the company next door to DB Shenker has made around half the components and modules for the International Space Station.

anyway, I have a couple of tiny questions for the folk who have been to the testing.
The free bus from the train station, I just want to confirm that it departs from the bus terminal to the right of the station? I've been to Doncaster loads! but have never left the station. lol also how was the reaction test? It looks rather fun, but I'm sure its probably not lol

anyway, I'm sure I will bump into the other candidates making there way to the test centre on Thursday morning (14th April) , so I will know I'm heading in the right direction.

The free bus - we waited around at front and a minibus arrived late, it was to the right of the train station as you face out, i didnt think it was a bus terminal though, just the road outside. I was travelling alone but bumped in to others outside looking equally lost and apprehensive.

The reaction test, i can't say it was fun but only because of what was riding on it i.e. the job, would be good to do again without that pressure. I too was a bopit master, along with Call of Duty etc. I think it is designed to test reaction times, but also how you react when things go wrong, i tried to work fast but accurate, and composed myself when it went too fast.

As for the cables test, i found this straightforward, master the basic principle in the examples and you will be fine.

By the sound of it you have done your preparation which is they key to many of the tests. Good luck.

Just wondering how others on here got on, i received a letter today saying i'd did well at interview and tests but others had scored higher, i am naturally disappointed. The letter does say that overall i did well and i would be invited back for interview if jobs became available before my test validation date runs out (which in my case is next Feb). I am hoping to find out if this is likely from HR next week, depends if they got enough people for two intakes i guess.

If there is little chance of Metro driving, i am going to take a look at train driving or see what roles are available within Nexus or DB that i might be suitable for. Hope some of you got the jobs.

Nexus are doing an appreticeship scheme but probably not what you're looking for. Haven't seen many other vacancies for a while. Think one of the last ones I saw was for ticket inspectors but that was a while back now. Good luck with your search!

Cheers, i'm a bit long in the tooth and grey in the hair for an apprenticeship i'll see what hr are say, just think with the all change programme it will be a good thing to be part of in some shape or form. My background is BT call centres but want a change of scene after 25 years. Cheers

i got the same letter as you m8 as i said i already work within the depot i enquired with hr and they said overall this was one of the highest scoring tests out of 32 who went to doncaster 20 passed .they are looking at another intake prob december but could not confirm at this point.myself i am totally gutted i am already driving metro cars in and around the depot so it seemed as a natural progression.

Sorry to hear that, but a possible new intake in December could be light at the end of the tunnel , your test result is valid for two years, so you would only need an interview. Have you considered train driving ? Not as many vacancies locally, but if you are prepared to relocate Scotrail take on every 6 months or so. Based in Edinburgh - not the worst place in the world to live. Cheers and good luck.

Probably one of the good things about the All Change programme is that there should be jobs of some description going for the next few years at least. I know a lot of PTEs are doing reorganisation at the minute and getting rid of people, but doesn't seem as bad for Nexus.
