I'm a driver on T&W Metro, always looking on this forum for other job opportunities, advice and any info etc.

This is my 1st post, just thought I'd respond to Parallellines about current recruitment of new drivers.

Unfortunately I believe that Metro don't acknowledge receipt of an application and don't bother to let applicants know if they've been successful/or not.

I know that interviews were held on Wednesday and Thursday and that there are 5 positions going, currently 5 vacancies on roster and a full quota is needed when DB take over in April. I know a friend of a cousin had an interview on Thursday and was told that he'd hear the outcome on Friday-which he didn't???

He was told that over 600 people applied, 60 were short-listed for interview. I'm not sure how many get sent down to Doncaster for testing but will let you know when I find out.

Plenty of drivers counting down days to retirement so imagine they will again take on sometime soon. Plus as soon as DB were announced as preferred bidder they released a statement with 4 key points, one of which was that more jobs would be created on Metro without any compulsory redundancies for the lifetime of the concession.

Just for the record, why the unions were backing the in house bid no one knows. I'd say the majority of drivers, and majority of workers whom the concession applies to wanted DB to win!

Sorry if you were unsuccessful, and to be the bearer of bad news, just thought I'd share what I know. Nothing worse than waiting, waiting and not knowing.

You never know maybe they may interview more? Just know that interviews were being held last week.

I know that a friend of mine(metro inspector)has passed interview and will be going to donny v.soon,also 2 of our snrs(that I know of !)applied for said vacancies but I've not heard how they got on !!

Perhaps this information will be of some use. I am hoping that this second interview is dotting the i's and crossing the t's but will be preparing fully anyways, would be gutted to miss out now.

Jobs went up internally at end of last week, so will be advertised externally any day now like you said. The last 6 recruited are about to go into passenger service accompanied by their minder drivers in order to complete their required 200 hours before passing out on their own.

Believe new course is to start in May or June, more probably June.

Thanks for this info, been waiting since April 2010 patiently, i was advised then that i would be picked up at some later date (subject to medical), when i rang the other day i was advised i will be invited back in a few months and i took that to be an interview, so i'm preparing now for full compentancy based interview, and driving girlfriend mad doing research.

Think i'll ring after weekend for clarification, feels like i'm so close, would hate
to miss out now.

Hi,

I always have a look for vacancies now and again, more curiosity than anything else. Plus very rarely do I see many, if any oppourtunities available to get on the mainline.

Don't think we would be classed as qualified, we have the relevant competencies to operate on network rail though would have to be trained up on traction and routes. It certainly couldn't do us no harm, maybe a slight advantage I'd imagine.

Just checking to see if any more information, i have been checking for these jobs to see if advertised externally but nothing as yet ? Are they being advertised internally only (if that is allowed nowadays) ?

I have rung DB a couple of times, i was advised the course is due to start roughly 3rd week in June. I believe i have to go back for interview, which is standard practice as it is a year since i passed the interview. Of course i still also need to complete a medical.

I'm trying to be patient, but its a struggle, for example if i know i may well be training through summer i don't want to book summer holidays etc.

I'd be grateful for any information, i don't want to be labelled a nuisance caller to DB personnel lol.

I'm guessing that the 30 min interview mentioned in the letter is the standard sit down interview chit chat about the key Competencies, so im studying hard to get through that stage.
I am however unsure what the day down Doncaster entails? I want to be as prepared as I can, if I manage to make it down there lol

not been on an awful lot. Actually turned out they weren't to be advertised externally, though open to anyone who might have enqired or got application forms from existing employees. Believe interviews are 1st week in March and course will start in June sometime. Wouldn't book summer holidays just in case, frustrating yes, but if successful then you'd be training all through summer.

Would imagine 30min interview would be the usual grilling, how have you coped in emergencies etc...?

Doncaster will be all the tests. Dot tests, basic mechanical, computer based reaction test-pretty sure these have been discussed on other threads in greater detail, more than I could give

Maybe if you PM Waiting he/she could advise you better as they took all the tests recently?

I've been trying for years just to get an interview, so I'm thrilled to get this far.

If you look on here and on google, you will get a good idea of the questions i was asked last time. How have you dealt with an emergency situation ? When have you worked in a team? When have you had to follow rules ? What can you tell us about our company ? Why do you want to be a driver ?
Last time round i found the interview style to be very relaxed, i felt at ease and that the interviewers where trying to get the best out of me, not trying to trip me up. I now have a date myself and am hoping it goes the same as last time. I would concentrate fully on your interview for now, however lots of information can be found on the tests here and google.

Once i knew i had passed the interview i set about preparing for the tests, i bought a cd rom, How to become a train driver which was very helpful- i still have it, get through your interview, pm me and i'll sent it on.

I practiced for the reaction test using Bopit and xbox, i got copies of Group Bourdon (Dot test) and practised, i did word games and Soduko etc to sharpen up for memory test, where i came so close to falling down was on Mechanical Comprehension, i have a clerical background, no interest in mechanics, so i learnt about pulleys and levers etc and thought id done enough, on the day the questions were not what i'd revised, this combined with the exam conditions was stressful, however i got through by the skin of my teeth. One tip i can give is Dot test mistakes count against you, in the mutiple choice its right answers that count, so if you are pushed for time you are best guessing the last few answers, rather than leaving blank, as the wrong answers will not count against you.

I had a rough idea about some of the assessment stuff, and have already got hold of a few brain training things to stimulate my gray cells lol

I work in IT at the moment, so in the same boat as you when it comes to the mechanical Comprehension stuff, though looking forward to becoming more familiar with it.

Well that's the interview out the way, and I must say it was a very enjoyable experience. The staff interviewing me were very polite and the questions put forward in a very friendly manner, I felt very comfortable and think I did reasonably well.

Just hoping I did well enough to get a crack at the Doncaster testing.

As an absolutely amazing bonus I asked if I could stick my head in the Engine shed to have a look. I managed to get a mini tour of the depot, walking the centre line and had a peek at the depot control board. It was AMAZING! topped off the interview nicely.

Good luck. The more i think about the in terview the more i shudder. Still saying as i've already passed the tests i've started applying for driver jobs with other operators.

Well that's the Interview in the bag! HR rang me on Sunday to confirm I had successfully made it through.
I had a little celebration dance mid phone call, I was that happy lol

So now onto the psychometrics stage.
I had a little crack at the Group Bourdon Test and the SCAAT Test last night, and well, I think I need some extra practice lol

I did it last year and passed so here goes: you can get a cd rom - how to become a train driver, that has information on all the tests, if not google physcometric testing for train drivers and read, a lot of people have put blogs on line. Find out what is included, i passed mechanical comprehension by one point, i mentioned this in my interview recently and was advised this has been taken out. Prepare and you'll do well, you've got this far, good luck.

Thanks for info. I believe our interview scores get added to the test scores and top 6 will start training towards end of june, hopefully plenty of people will pass at Doncaster so there will be a second intake after that. just delighted to pass interview when i thought i'd blown it.
