Using the underground in London

I have to travel from Ramsgate to West Kensington (Zone 2) and back again

The South Eastern website doesn’t give an option for using London Underground. The forum’s ticketing does give London Zone 2 but when I try it it comes up with no itinerary found

I’m assuming this means that I can’t buy an e ticket

Will I be able to get the appropriate ticket from the booking office or ticket machine please?

And, if so, is that the best and most cost efficient method?

No, you can't. They are not accepted by London Underground.

Yes, or online, but it will need to be a ticket to Zone U12 London and will only have an itinerary for the National Rail part of the journey. From the London Terminal, such as Victoria or St Pancras, no itinerary can be generated as the times are not entered into NR systems.

I didn't try Southeasternd site but putting Zone 1-2 as the destination into the Greater Anglia site gave ticket prices and itinerary for both normal and High speed services.

The forums site should offer you paper tickets, but you need to search for zones 1-2 rather than just 2 (as it needs to cover every underground zone you travel through after reading London on NR)

BR fares lists options valid for one return journey in zones 2-3, which I think would be changing at Stratford, West Brompton and Earl's Court (although West Brompton might be close enough to walk from?).

It's ~2 hours via King's Cross and Barons Court, ~2:20 via West Brompton and ~2:15 via Victoria or Charing Cross / Embankment, so I'd say the main factor's the extra cost of HS1 services.

Whichever way you do, I'd recommend getting a Network Railcard (or another you're eligible for) if you don't have one already, as it saves £35 on the anytime HS1 Z1 fare, £30 on the anytime non-HS1 Z1 fare, £21 on the off-peak HS1 Z1 fare and £17 on the off-peak non-HS1 Z1 fare, so you'd be saving at least half the cost of the railcard with one journey whichever route you chose.

Yes - think you are right about HS1

It is a time saver but thinking on it - if I have time I could go to Charing X or Victoria and just get the District Line to West Kensington

The Network Railcard can only be used after 10:00, so is of limited use for Anytime fares. The Senior Railcard, which the OP holds can only be used once the Off Peak fares become available so is of similarly limited use.

Isn’t a valid route as the ticket is only valid from Ramsgate to London and then for an underground journey in Zone 2. It isn’t valid on the Overground to West Brompton.

West Brompton (and Kensington Olympia) NR station is £98.70/87.00 (not HS1) with cross-London travel included, so if you don't mind a short walk (or a bus from Kenny) you can save a few £

Where I am going to is close to West Ken Station (it’s not an area I know) so think I’ll stick with simple

Non HS1 to Charing C or Victoria and District Line
