Using Southwark Underground to access Waterloo East

Silly question, but can't find an answer via the National Rail station info.

The platforms at Waterloo East have a subway to Southwark Underground station.

A friend will soon be travelling daily for a week or two from Dartford to Union Street SE1 - and is planning to do this either with daily paper tickets or a weekly season ticket Dartford - London (SR terminals) - Dartford is not Oyster-able, and he doesn't want to pay the extra for Travelcard that he won't need.

Will a 'London Terminals' ticket allow exit / entry via Southwark Underground (it's the easiest walking route to that bit of Southwark, especially if it's raining) or will the barriers at Southwark only accept tickets that include validity on the Underground?

I've used it as a short cut once or twice, but I've had an all zones travelcard at the time, and not given it much thought.

The barriers won't open at Southwark with a London Terminals ticket, only for Travelcards. Of course, if they ask nicely it is always possible for the staff to open them, but not guaranteed!

Not sure it's a good idea to rely on 'asking nicely' during the rush hours!

If you had a PAYG Oyster with a bit of credit on it, would you get charged passing through?

Doesn't touching out without having touched in, or vice versa, result in you getting charged a maximum fare?

I think it will be simpler to work out a walking route from either London Bridge or Waterloo!

If you have an Oyster card, as long as it has credit for at least a zone 1 journey, you can pass through Southwark LU free of charge, touching in on one gate line and out on the other. Else, Paper Platform tickets are 20p instead of the usual £1 charged on LU.

Not in my experience. The booking office at Waterloo also refused to sell platform tickets for East station. I went one evening in 2011 when (bizarrely) only two out of the three exits were gated, and was refused exit from the station. The CSA insisted it was a compulsory ticket area (it is not). In the end we spent so long arguing over the matter, his shift ended and he had to let us through!

No you can't, and you will apparently be charged 40p to pass through on Oyster.

tell your friend to buy / renew their rail only season to dartford at the tube office at southwark, it will cost the same, but be valid for station access through southwark, I know this as i used to work there at the tube booking office....

Might work - although would mean a special journey to Southwark at the start of the week, which again may not be worth the effort.

(since it is likely to be 3 or 4 days a week, he may well do it on daily tickets not a season)

In that case, could I for example travel to Southwark LUL from Forest Hill, travelling via London Bridge NR and touch out being charged the NR fare? Or does that only work from a NR only station such as a typical journey from Blackheath to Waterloo East?

I don't quite understand. You asked if it was possible to go from the street outside Southwark LU to Waterloo East BR, or from Waterloo East BR to the street outside Southwark LU. Doing what I said enables you to do exactly that, with no unnecessary time and effort!

You need to follow the signs for Southwark Tube station, down the stairs and exit through the Waterloo East gate line using your paper ticket; then immediately enter the Underground gate line with your Oystercard. Go down the escalator, straigh along the corridor, up the escalator and exit the gate line and then you're on the junction with Blackfriars Road/Union St/The Cut.

I don't think you get charged 40p to do that.
