Rather than hijack another thread I thought it would be better to start a new one to let you know of my experience of using an overseas credit card with no chip & pin to purchase advance ticket(s) and try to collect it from the machine. Both tickets were bought online from Hong Kong
A couple of years ago when GNER were still around I bought 2 tickets online to get me from Kings Cross to Newcastle and back. As these advance tickets came online at different times I bought them at different times and although I used my UK credit card for the first ticket I used my Hong Kong HSBC credit card for the second. I printed all the emails they sent me with reference numbers and suchlike and had no problems getting the outward ticket at KX as this was bought with a UK chip & pin card. At KX I put my card in the machine and out came my tickets seconds later. However when I went to Newcastle to collect the second ticket, a couple of days before I was to travel back, I put the HK HSBC card into the machine and as the machine didn't like it my card was rejected with a message to contact the ticket office. Anyhow I came prepared for such an occurrence and went to the info counter in the ticket office and told them the story. The lady asked for the card and then in no time I had the tickets printed and was on my way.
I just write this as I appreciate what I needed to bring to the ticket office and had no problems but I just wonder how many times this sort of thing happens with people buying advance tickets from overseas and having a problem or two getting their tickets issued. Perhaps it doesn't happen too often but would like any feedback anyway, if for no other reason than to remind people what they need to bring.
