Using London-Calais day return for Calais-London only

Hi everyone,

I'm travelling to France tomorrow (Sunday) evening, returning Tuesday evening. I'm taking the Portsmouth/St Malo ferry on the way out and returning via the Dover/Calais ferry.

I've wanted to try the London-Calais ticket for a long time - I'm trying to work out whether it's feasible to use it for the return journey on Tuesday. Seat61.com suggests it's probably feasible, although has no evidence behind it.

Questions I have - is it possible to buy this ticket a couple of days in advance of the date of travel? How does the "control" ticket for the ferry that I've read about in other threads work? Is it given to you when purchasing, or when you take the outbound ferry?

I've read through other threads on the forum, but I can't find the answers.

As Seat61 says, you would be taking a risk in attempting to only use the return portion of the Calais day ticket. Ferry companies are notoriously itchy about allowing people to only use the return portion of a return ticket. Given the current situation in Calais with immigration, I'd be very wary of attempting to do it.

You can buy one-way foot passenger tickets from £6. That might be a better idea.
