Hello,

A random thought occured to me while coming home from Sheffield on the 1718 semi-fast. It was quite busy, because XC aren't running the 1721, because of the engineering work between Chesterfield and Derby. Thus we have Chesterfield to Leeds passengers on board as well.

XC are diverting via Doncaster between Leeds and Sheffield this week, but the effect in the evening is that there is a spare path via the fast route. XC aren't running a (Chesterfield-)Sheffield-Leeds(-York) shuttle, presumably because they don't have the stock. But could a different operator? If you assume that you've lots of evening peak passengers to shift, even one of Northern's 150s would help. And platforms would be available at either end, because you'd be using an existing path.

Yes and no, it would need to be able to reach high speeds that voyagers can reach with a similar acceleration to not slip out of the path

Your 2-car train was "quite busy" but was it unable to cope, and if so, over what section?

Good point! Definitely not a Northern 150 then.

A lot more than usual got off at Sheffield, and the train didn't thin out as much; people were standing as far as Barnsley; more people got off at Leeds than usual. I do this trip most days, it gets busier as the week goes on. Some of those will be new passengers from Chesterfield and Sheffield to Leeds who would normally catch the faster XC service.

There might be a "free" path between Sheffield and Leeds,, but there may well not be a platform as the diverted XC is likely to use the same platform as usual at Sheffield and Leeds, plus the diverted train almost certainly uses the booked path between Sheffield and Swinton and/or between South Kirkby and Leeds.

Also, given all the other threads regarding crew and unit availability at various TOCs, what makes you think that Northern would have the resources to run such an additional train/?

Last bit first: I didn't say they would have, I asked if there was any reason why they or any other operators couldn't run at short notice. That's one of the reasons the thread got shunted into Speculative Discussion. It's a theoretical discussion, I suppose.

On the first part: the 1721 from Sheffield hasn't been running all week, so there has been platform space at Sheffield and Leeds, and the path between the two is free. The only way any part of it could be busy would be if the 1621 ran 30-ish minutes later, and picked up the path of the 1721 north of Moorthorpe (because of the extra time it takes to run via Doncaster). As it happens... it does, according to RTT. So my entire thought was moot.
