In addition to the post above, I would advise that you contact platform staff in advance of the train arriving to advise them, so they can have their key ready to unlock the DVT and be in the correct position on the platform. When the train is in the correct formation, the DVT is at the Norwich end of the train.

I've taken my bike on the GEML many-a-time. It goes in the DVT on the Norwich-end of the train. If you're getting on at Norwich you shouldn't have any problems as it's right near the front but if you're getting on at LST make sure you arrive in plenty of time and find a member of staff to help as it's a good 5 minute walk to the other end of the train and when you get there you might find you have to wander around again to find someone to unlock the DVT.
If you're getting on anywhere en-route (I recommend Manningtree for fantastic cycling) you should find some platform staff and if there's none about stand at the Norwich end of the platform ready to pop it in the trailer straight away.

At Liverpool Street & Norwich the Guard is (99pc of the time) at the rearmost Door Control Panel (unless sitting in a 1st Class carriage at LST) , at intermediate stations what I have found is that they are most of the time the ones who open's the DVT so they use the Door Panel in the DVT and then hop out.
As said the DVT is usually at the Down end of the train.
Also it is advisable to make reservations for your bike - if you are not sure what train you will be travelling on make a few for the services around the time you should be travelling.

Can you still make multiple reservations? Thought that they had stopped doing this due to people reserving space on more than one train and thus meaning no reservations for other bikes?

It is easy to do in some cases (e.g. when you are travelling to 2/3 different stations with manned ticket offices) as you just get one reservation at each station.
However it could be harder if this isn't the case.
Some stations refuse to issue reservations on the basis that you have to have a ticket. York station, which is normally very good, is among them unfortunately. I have checked with friendly stations such as Machynlleth who confirmed that there is no such rule.
Forcing customers to present tickets causes a nightmare when organising a cycling trip for a group of people, especially if some of them are going to be using railcards, rovers, and will only go on the trip if they can book AP tickets which creates a 'chicken and egg' scenario.
Officially NXEA say you need a reservation on the 'InterCity' service between Norwich [NRW] and London Liverpool St [LST} however according to regular users there are 5 bike spaces and they have never seen them all used and, despite me encouraging them to get reservations for our Norfolk cycle ride along disused lines this week, they refuse to get reservations on the basis that there is no need to do so. I'll have to trust their judgement as regular users, but my advice is always to reserve, where possible.
By the way is anyone reading this interested in joining us on rides along (mostly) disused railway lines? If so please either send me a PM, reply here, or go to UserCP and click Group Membership and apply to join!
142094 - I bet you heard this from EC staff. They have fobbed several people off with the same excuse, maybe there is some truth in it but if there are serial offenders then they should deal with them and not effectively punish all of us! The solution is to go to a more friendly TOC.

Heard it from a few people I know who tried to get reservations for more than one train, but could only get it on one after showing tickets. I would say this is quite fair, especially during peak times.
