Is this even possible? Can I do on train?

More importantly, how is the cost calculated?

It can be done, but generally speaking it should be done before boarding the train unless the upgrade is to Weekend First.

Yes it's possible, but should be done before boarding the train where possible, as otherwise you're liable to be treated as not holding a valid ticket.

The charge would be the difference between the appropriate walk up First Class and Standard fares for the journey being made, or a Weekend First upgrade (where available) if cheaper.
