The difference between the appropriate standard and first class fares for the journey being made. Obtained either at a ticket office or on board.

Are you sure it is permitted to do this on-board? This is not the usual procedure for most operators - if no ticket office is available then, AFAICT, you must still use any other available facilities to buy a valid ticket.

The only place you could obtain an excess before boarding would be the ticket office (the passenger already holds a Standard All Line Rover).

The iKB has exactly the same text for "opportunity to excess before boarding" and "no opportunity to excess before boarding" suggesting no penalty for the former.

I do note that the public page on upgrading to First Class (http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/times_fares/ticket_types/46557.aspx) is much harsher in tone than the iKB (says not possible with BritRail pass whereas iKB says same procedure as with a Rover or Ranger). There is no public equivalent of the iKB excess procedures pages that I can find sadly.

It's far from crystal clear, that much I'd say!

Honest opinion, I’d have a nice word with guard either on boarding, or as soon as possible after (depending on journey) But it does depend how desperate for 1st class you are. If you’re not too bothered, a quiet word and see what they say-if it’s too dear then you don’t have to if you have seen them straight away.
