Upgrading a season ticket

I went to the ticket office today and they said that I cannot excess a season ticket. But the NR website says:

Standard Class Season Ticket holders may upgrade their Season Ticket to First Class at the ticket office before they board the train (or on the train if there is no open ticket office where you board the train).

Print out the relevant bit of info and take it back to the ticket office. If that doesn't resolve it, send off a letter/email to the appropriate customer services.

There are many circumstances in which you can't get an excess fare.

If your ticket was for Standard class A-B and you simply wanted to upgrade First Class A-B then that should be permitted unless you have a season ticket restriction (early bird etc).

I'm guessing this is a Zones 1-5 Travelcard (based on the previous topic regarding the commute from Croydon to Collindale), and I'm guessing standard class has turned out to be extremely busy!

The way I read that initially is they must upgrade their season ticket to First Class.

Whereas I read it as referring to a single or return journey. The procedure for that is simple enough (difference between standard and first class single or return fare). I don't know of any procedure to upgrade an entire season ticket from standard to first class.

There never used to be. You surrendered and bought a new ticket.

Upgrade was only per journey.

I have no reason to believe it is any different now.

I would suggest that it's an oversimplification of the relevant clause of Condition 39 of the NRCoC.

If you have a standard class Season Ticket, you may only travel in first class accommodation (which includes occupying seats or standing in any part of the carriage) if:

(a) the difference between the full single fare for first class accommodation and the full single fare for standard class accommodation has been paid before your journey starts;

(b) any other relevant supplement set out in the notices and other publications of the Train Companies has been paid before your journey starts;

(c) notices are displayed allowing passengers with standard class tickets to use first class accommodation; or

(d) on-train ticket staff have given you permission.

In all other cases, if you travel in first class accommodation (or the equivalent) with a standard class Season Ticket, you will be treated as having joined the train without a valid ticket, and the relevant parts of Condition 2 or 4 will apply.

It is called a 'changeover' and in some cases can take days to authorise (you will be able to use your season ticket as normal during this time). The price of the changeover will depend on when the season ticket was bought (atleast that's how it used to work, I haven't done one since the NFM ceased being printed), however the season must have atleast one month remaining on it and the expiry date must remain the same.

You should do this at the issueing office, although in some cases it should be possible to do it elsewhere.

A specific single or return journey on a season ticket can be excessed as if it were a single or return ticket (the difference between standard and first), but this must be done before you board the train.

Yep, I've had someone ask this about their season ticket, and I tried on Avantix but it blocked the option to do an excess. I'd imagine this is the same in the ticket offices machines.
