Crewe. Hands down. The place should be renamed "the national fridge". And whatever the weather wherever you start / end your journey, CRE will always be wet and / or close to zero.

Definitely. I think VT stations in general leave a lot to be desired, I've already mentioned Wigan NW, which has all the appeal of a smallpox epidemic. Oxenholme is nice in the Summer, but I can't imagine it being a nice place to wait on a freezing Winter night.

Very rural too - though I think Berney Arms beats it!

I noticed recently that according to Google Maps, Berney Arms no long has a line running through it. The Wherry lines seem to disappear east of Acle/Reedham Junction and never join at Breydon Junction or make it to Yarmouth.

Warrington Bank Quay no more needs to be said. ****ing freezing in May, I even tweeted them about it and problems arised. (they love me there cos I'm @Terry_TC on Twitter )

I'm always changing trains at Warrington Bank Quay, the scenery (a giant soap factory) is not so great although like many Virgin stations a bit of a refresh would go a long way (especially the indoor waiting rooms!)...

Do you have temperature problems? When I get a PRE-EUS or PRE-BHM/WLV (think that's right) the Warrington area's cold, and that's on a train. On the station it's like hell. I now beg for a 3 country link, Scotland-Wales via the WCML.

I've never noticed a drop in temperature whenever I've been on a train in Warrington (Bank Quay), and that will be bordering on 100 times now.

Bristol Parkway. Despite having very nice staff, it is a wind tunnel that has a railway line running through it!

I've caught the 0040 to Cardiff from Bristol Parkway after having just caught 1V71 (1708 Edinburgh to Bristol Temple Meads) from Newcastle at 1840, it was actually very scary as I was at the rear of the train so had to go right outside on the London-end of the platform!!

Change at Manchester Oxford Road? It's a permitted route.

I'm sure someone's already said it, but Wakefield Kirkgate on a Saturday night. You might be taking your life in your hands, even if you tried to "escape" to Westgate.

A place I really did get stranded once was Westbury on a freezing winter's night. Plenty of stone trains coming through, and a slightly odd ECS that consisted of 3X150 and 1X142 that stopped, picked up another 150 and disappeared in the direction of Taunton.

Fair enough for mid Wales, but you'd change at WBQ for services to Llandudno, so you'd have to change at Chester as well as Crewe.

Services from West Wales, Cardiff, Newport, Hereford and Shrewsbury for Preston, The Lakes, Carlisle and Scotland require one change at Crewe.

Services for the North Wales Coast require a change at Chester, direct from Cardiff, Newport, Hereford and Shrewsbury.

A bit draughty, yes. The state of the lifts is a worse problem. One of them was covered in urine and vomit the last time I tried to use them. The ticket office and café aren't really too bad, in my opinion.

Flitwick and Bedford can be a bit chilly and Flitwick certainly is windy when an EMT service to Bedford or St Pancras whizzes through.

Stevenage is rotten, for similar reasons in some cases (although the only lifts there are not supposed to be for passenger use). It doesn't help much that there is a big entertainment complex on the west side of the line, and the town on the east side.

A lot of the shelter problems could be solved with canopies and some form of windbreak, but it's still a rotten station in a rotten town.

Can't say I've had many problems with Bletchley. Can wait either at the main building or the shelters on some of the platforms which I've found to be quite warm. Can't comment on the lift.

Stevenage station is so so. The waiting room doors fly open everytime a train passes, so it's hard to escape the cold.

Another thing about EMT services passing Flitwick is the automatic announcement for 'train not stopping' usually plays after the train has gone

As for bitter cold stations
Exeter St Davids is normally freezing!
Same goes for Tiverton Parkway
I find Bristol Temple Meads to be terribly cold too.

Tiverton has got a very warm waiting area though, and it is open until a decent time (9.30pm).

Exeter is a cold station on the platforms, but the platform 1, and platform 3/4 waiting rooms are stifling!

At least at Flitwick you have the Kebab Shop at the top of the hill and Tesco's across the road. Also a couple pubs to shelter in. I must admit it can be a bit breezy specially on platform 4.

When nasty, windy, cold raining etc.

Westbury is the top of the list by far due to the wind and that it is very open to the elements.

Wolverhampton is also rather nasty when it is very windy or very cold though.

Armadale same as Wolverhampton, also that the wind goes underneath the shelters as well.

I agree there but there is the village nearby although not many houses admittedly, where as Berney Arms has nothing. Having just looked I was suprised at how many trains actually do stop at Berney Arms though.

- stations that have no facilities (in which case any low-passenger-usage station might qualify)
- stations with poor facilities for the number of trains and passengers (Widnes, Kirkby)
- stations in remote locations (Dovey Junction)
- urban stations in South Bronx-like locations with lurking chavs (several candidates on Merseyside, Manchester or London)
- overcrowded stations (Liverpool Central, Birmingham New St)
- gloomy, dark, spooky stations (Green Lane)
- ancient and crumbling structures (Wakefield Westgate)
- brutalist concrete monstrosities (Elephant and Castle)

Between Queen Street and Central LL the Central one is less pleasing to be on, due to the smell which i guess is the result from the large floods they had in 1994?

Bearley on the Hatton-Stratford branch would kinda suck. A single platform long enough for two carriages with a crappy bus shelter. Nothing at all to do on the station.

A la Monty Pythons Yorkshiremen: "Luxury" it's got a shelter. Yer soft up north, try Bedminster, Devonport, Dockyard.
