Worst one I had was Chapel en Le Frith on a Saturday evening, having overslept. Next train back to Manchester was another 2 hours, station is a bout 2 miles on the hillside from the village and my mobile was running on fumes but thankfully got a friend to come out and retrieve me.

I know the feeling, I was stuck there on a freezing November night a few years ago as I'd arrived 45 minutes early (or 15 minutes late, depending on how you look at it). Absolutely no one around, complete silence, then hearing rustling in the bushes behind platform 2

Tiverton Parkway used to be quite a dull station to wait at, still can be really. Remember having to wait hours there when I was a kid waiting for a bus, before the cafe opened. And of course, having to put my fingers in my ears every time an HST pulled out of the station.
Now, it's not too bad; although it's still in the middle of nowhere, it's not a huge walk into Sampford Peverell, and the buses are quite regular (they were back then too, just not the one we wanted to catch...).

I've only ever seen one or two people get on or off here.
The last time I went through Darnall there were a group of trespassers wandering around the track, and there appeared to be some sort of minor fire. On a previous occasion, passengers were asked to move away from the windows due to reports of yobs throwing missiles at the trains.

Not an amazing service, think only the Merthyr services call there, not sure about the Aberdare services but I definitely know the Treherbert services don't call.

Oxenholme. Virgin Trains put no effort into looking after the passengers there and trains are too infrequent. If the companies teamed up they could make a much more active line around this dismal part of the WCML. (and the signal sucks)

I think Oxenholme gets quite a good service, especially compared to Penrith!

Trust me, it doesn't. Never used Penrith but I do know the service there is disgraceful.

Trust me, it does. 3tp2h roughly to London and Birmingham isn't bad going for Oxenholme, as well as hourly services to Glasgow and roughly 1tp2h to Edinburgh. Then there's Manchester trains...

You have a point. I've had an hour's wait with no trains stopping. (Mind me, it was a weekend). But that's nothing compared to Preston and Lancaster further south and Carstairs further north. All OLD needs really is just Northern Rail running through from Manchester Victoria to Newcastle, imo.

Why would a MCV-NCL service run via the WCML, and how do you plan on running it without holding up current inter-city trains?

I think I would suggest Yetminster. It is in the middle of nowhere and surrounded by request stops on either side, making access difficult - and being left behind more so. It's not as though the local non-request stop is particularly close - and the service is only 1tp2h.
What did Longcross do to deserve a place on this list? Its service has improved greatly of late, and it is quite a nice area as well. OK, so its day service is limited, but it's not that far to Sunningdale etc...

Someone has said Dovey Junction my first choice used to be great waiting room there many moons ago,my other choice is Whitland visited it a few months ago, very sad to see the buildings falling apart and not an awful lot there..as for safety i say Reading West a no go zone after dark.

Stuck there a few years ago in the winter in the midst of a howling gale, lashing down with rain and being told to get off the train and wait for the next train , but they didnt know how long it would be !.
There are a distinct lack of shelters so we refused to get off the train and so they ran it through as a non-stop express to Southport.

I didn't realise when I started this thread how many responses it would generate. I have looked at some of the stations mentioned on Google Earth and have come to the the conclusion that Altnabreac takes some beating. I certainly wouldn't like to be stranded there. But why would someone be there in the first place to be in a position to get stranded. I did notice that Altnabreac has a decent? shelter. Have a look at the shelter at Berney Arm

Some people use it for hill walking. A chap I know alighted there just for the fun of it, and walked to the nearest town!
(He is a hardcore hiker by the way)

He would definitely have to be a HARDCORE hiker for that. The problem with Berney Arms is that some people get off there who don't realise how remote it actually is and how remote parts of Norfolk are. I sail on the Broads and am very aware of the remoteness of some of the places. I certainly agree as I said before Altnabreac is definitely bleak.

I'd personally love to live there. Proper peace and quiet. Just surprised this station had a building!
