Unusual update on Southern website

14:32 Brighton to Ashford International due 16:18

This train will be started from Haywards Heath at 14:29.
It will call additionally at: Haywards Heath.
It will no longer call at: Brighton.
This train will be formed of 14 coaches.
This is due to electrical supply problems.

Just seen this on the Southern website. Due to electrical supply problems near Lewes, some trains are being diverted to Haywards Heath, including Ashford services - which may be the first time a 171 has served HHE in passenger use.

Also the 14 coaches bit made me smile too, cant imagine a 14-car turbostar.

I have to say that a 14 car Turbo would be quite interesting to see, I guess in the form of 4 units.

Did this actually happen or did someone slip on the keyboard as I wouldn't have thought most platforms could take 14 car trains...

Well, it could be 3 x 171/8 + a 171/7, perhaps ... or perhaps a typo for 4.

Do the 171's run in a 7 car formation at all? I'm not familiar with them.

If so, sounds like the train has been entered into the system twice with both trains put in as a 7 car, thus making a 14 car. I've seen the same thing at work where an 8 car has been put into the system twice and then shown as 16 coaches!

I don't think you could get a 7 car, since the Southern 171's come in either 2 (171/7) or 4 (171/8) car varieties, I believe.

They only have 2 & 4 car 171s

Oh yeah - I know it can be done with that formation...or lots of 171/7's
Just wondered though if there are technical limitations on running such trains in service and whether the platforms are long enough for them.
I did wonder if it was just a typo for 4 :P
