Battersby is unusual.

Now a Y on a singe line, with a loop. Used to be a junction with 4 lines. One of which was partly rope hauled [1 in 4?].

Still has remains of a second platform. Although only one in use now the online timetable has a platform indicator unlike other local stations with two platforms!

Portsmouth and Southsea probably needs to be in at least a couple of these categories with the high level and low level station.

I've always thought Cambridge has a strange layout.

Not for much longer.

Cambridge's "one long platform in two halves" was pretty standard in the 1830s; many early terminii only had two platforms, one for arrivals and one for departures.

Can I nominate Manchester Victoria in the "Multiple platform through station only used as two back-to-back terminii" category?

The island platform's been in operation for several months now...or was there something else there I missed?
The scissors-crossover platforms are still rather unusual (unique?). Possibly there should be a category for 'multiple platforms on one face' as at Cambridge, Colchester North, Penryn, perhaps other places too.

Edinburgh Waverley has a scissors crossover between platforms 1,2,19,20 at the North side.

Westerfield Platform 1 is used by Ipswich bound trains from Lowestoft and trains to/from Felixstowe on account of the crossover being the Ipswich side of the level crossing

I thought most WHL stations were right hand running?

Sorry, I was involved in the outline design for the new through platforms and then had an enforced break - I wasn't aware they'd actually built the thing!

York has a "unidirectional-divided-into-two-single-face" as well, but Cambridge's is bi-di.

The NRE website station plan is very difficult to follow. Apparently, it's not a triangle but has a single track line passing over the other lines.

http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/stations/sjp/SHY/plan.html?rtnloc=SHY

Maybe we need a new thread for "unusual plan layouts" - this is certainly about the furthest from reality and most unhelpful one I've seen. (As an aside, the new - since I was last there - footbridge between p3 and p4 looks much more appealing than the old subway. Used to hate arriving on p4 late at night and having to use it.)

Agreed - completely unhelpful. What these plans don't show (probably for simplicity?) is the huge curve that some of the platforms have. Had I looked at this before going to Shipley station, I think I'd have been pretty confused on arrival!

Arram has its platforms positioned either side of a level crossing, so that a train calling at the station does not cause the crossing to be closed while making a station call.

(I'm sure there must be other examples of this set up, but I didn't see any on the thread.)

There are also plenty that don't. The West Coastaway is a good example, with at least Southbourne and Warblington with both platforms on one side of the barriers. Since this is also the passenger crossing between platforms, leave arrival too late and you may miss the train!

In the case of Southbourne, it seems like for trains crossing over the LC towards London, the barriers go down when the train is in the Emsworth area, meaning they are down for some time. On the Havant bound platform (which is the one that holds the road up), there is a starter signal and the train seems like it can be brought into the previous (platform) section with the signal not cleared, but it is usually cleared well before the train is in the platform, probably to aid on time running.

York also had scissors crossovers between platforms 8A/8B (now 3/4) and 9A/9B (now the truncated platform 5) and the erstwhile centre roads before the 'modernisation' that massively reduced its capacity just before the MU 'revolution' came along and increased the demand for platform capacity. Ho hum.

It isn't only used as two back to back terminii though. What about the Stalybridge to Liverpool Lime Streets and the Rochdale to Wigans?

Thinking about Castleford & that might be classed as an artificial Terminus, as ass passenger trains scheduled to call there reverse[don't know any train that terminates there] Castleford is also a weird station as the line is double tracked[even though only 1 platform is in use] through the station trains can head through the station without reversing, but it's mainly for Freight use.
