Unusual Passenger flows?

The 11.35 Man Vic to Lime Street and the 12.07 Man Pic to Lime Street. Both are TPE trains.
were cancelled today. the announcements stating it was due to "unusually heavy passenger flows"

Can anyone throw light as to what this means and what was going on.

I'd say York races they're turning them early and running them back.

Pure speculation: large flows of passengers going to York for the races have delayed trains.

Looking at RTT, it shows quite a few TPE trains have picked up delays en-route to York and long dwells at York - with the delays increasing as the journey progresses, presumably from losing their path. (Strangely RTT shows that the 12:07 did run, albeit late - having spent 10 mins at York. Similarly, the 11:44 Man Pic to Man Airport (the 09:27 from Middlesbrough) was terminated short at Man Picc.)

Probably these two were terminated short as well, it means they show as cancelled for that part of the journey. Another tactic is to send the Man Pic via Warrington to Liverpool trains via Chat Moss instead, running non stop from Man Oxford Road to Lime street. Obviously this helps get the train back on time, but isnt much good for Birchwood, Warrington and Liverpool South Parkway passengers.

Considerable problems caused by York Races. Large numbers of passengers attempting to join already full services significantly increasing station dwell times. Additional stop orders placed on some services due to passengers not all being able to board the scheduled services (Thirsk being a particular problem in this regard, with the Newcastle services being given stop orders as the Middlesbrough trains are full and standing departing Middlesbrough).

A few minutes lost due to the above means a lost path between York - Leeds - Manchester, and suddenly a 5 - 10 minute delay spirals into a 20 - 30 minute delay due to following (mainly) stopping trains.

Yesterday evening I returned to Teesside from Manchester. My Airport - Middlesbrough train started from Piccadilly due to earlier delays through York, they stepped up earlier services and turned them around faster. On arrival at York (8pm) we were swamped and that's with an additional York - Middlesbrough having been run 10 minutes ahead of us. Credit to TPE for having flexible thinking to keep everyone moving
