I noticed last night that a Crosscountry train called at Thirsk (not usually served at all by XC) at around 2200 at least according to the live departures board on NRE. Does anyone know of any reason for this? I've also seen one call at Northallerton about a month ago, again this station isn't normally served by Crosscountry. In both cases the train was going to Newcastle, and in the case of the Thirsk one came from Reading. Also the first time I've seen a train call at Thirsk but not Northallerton.

I think there are around one train per day that calls at Thirsk, and one or two stop at Northallerton. Will have to check the Timetable

No XC services are booked to call at Thirsk or Northallerton. XC however do occasionally stop at Northallerton at TPE or EC request in Lieu of a cancelled service or high demand, and this is fairly routine. Thirsk however is very unusual and I can only speculate at to why an XC service stopped at Thirsk. Either as a special stop on GC's behalf, or to pick up or drop off a member of train crew out of course.

The only other possible scenario is if sessay wheelchex (at milepost 17) detects a train problem, the train is automatically routed through Thirsk station and stopped at the signal beyond. Tis enables the train to be examined while keeping the main line clear, unless said examination requires the line to be blocked. Should it transpire the train cannot proceed any further then passengers would be detrained at Thirsk and conveyed on the next available service or by bus or taxi.

There was a cancelled GC service last night (looks like it restarted at Northallerton :s)

There was an XC originating at Reading after it, but it is reported seemingly on the FL through Thirsk

As an aside, there also appears to be one XC service a day calling at Chester-le-Street, which appears to be on a journey to Guildford

The GC has been cancelled tonight aswell (15th) of course I'm working 1P60 if there is anyone at Thirsk awaiting the GC ill take them to Northallerton where the GC is starting. It is possible therefore xc 1E64 did a special stop for anyone from London (who were conveyed on 1S32) be dropped off and to pick up anyone who missed 1P60.

EDIT....

CONFIRMED. Message on Tyrell confirms cancellation of 1N96 starting at NTR pax forward on 1S32 from London to NTR, 1P60 TPE to pick up from THI and xc 1E64 special stop at THI at 22.02 for those from London to set down

Well that has it settled then :)

Any idea why the GC is starting at Northallerton? Last night said a brake problem...surely it can't have happened 2 nights in a row?!

Also, is 1E64 special stop order to set down at Northallerton for passengers from London, as I don't think it is booked to call there either?

No, passengers conveyed from KGX on EC 1S32 to NTR, from YRK and THI to NTR on TPE 1P60, both to connect with 1N96 @ NTR, and pax from London to Thirsk transferred from 1S32 at York onto XC 1E64 to stop to set down @ THI as 1P60 left yrk before 1S32 arrived.

I passed a 180 in the platform 1 loop at darlo @ 15:50, that left for Heaton once 1P51 arrived. Then the gc hst set passed me at Hutton bonville heading south when I was heading north on 1P60 at about 21:50
