I've just tried to book a ticket from Birmingham New Street to Berkhamsted for the 5th Feb leaving at 22:17 and changing at Milton Keynes as the return leg. Both Split ticket ( iOS & web ) and the forums site both give me an unspecified error - along the lines of 'Oops -something went wrong' - but didn't tell me what the issue was . I assume it is something to do with the Avanti leg. The Avanti website appears to let me book this train as part of the journey as does the LNR site. I need some certainty I can catch the 22:17 and didn't really want to wait any longer before booking so in the end I bought my return ticket ( BKM<>BHM ) from LNR for a few pounds more . Have I missed something ?

Sorry, that was a bug on our side. It was failing because it couldn't get a reservation for the off-peak day single from Tring to Berkhamsted (LNWR disable counted places for flexible tickets, which makes sense because they're completely useless) - it was incorrectly not identifying that segment as optional because you board before midnight at Milton Keynes, and split at Tring after midnight.

It should now be fixed
