Unscheduled stop at station.

The Northern service I went for this morning failed to arrive due to a unit failure.

Board said next service was 30 minutes, which was correct, however the next train, which usually runs through, made an unscheduled stop.

I have never known this happen before. New regime or just luck?

Stop orders are often put on other trains to cover cancelled ones. Maybe new in Northern Land but certainly not a new thing on the Western.

Depending on the circumstances it's quite common for this to happen at times of disruption.

It's generally done when there's an hour or more until the next train. Back when I commuted from Cambridge to Waterbeach, I used to get on the occasional XC when the GN service was cancelled, because the next one was over an hour away.

It's common practice on the Buxton line when the service following a cancelled one is scheduled to skip stations.

Common practice down on the SW is if an express is cancelled and its stops don't get served, it'll get replaced by another one.

For example, when an Exeter is turned back at Basingstoke/Salisbury, it's not uncommon for the following Salisbury to get an SSO at Clapham.

On the complete flipside, if a Weybridge via Hounslow ends up 15L they will run it fast round the Hounslow Loop.

Happens quite a bit on the Calder Valley line which has fairly complicated stopping patterns.

If a service is cancelled or turned round early due to disruption (often in the Leeds-facing bay platform at Rochdale) then they are quite proactive at adding extra stops to the fast or semi-fast services so that people don't have such a long wait for the next scheduled service.

I guess there is enough slack in the timetable to do this, and from Northern's point of view it can help to avoid delay-repay claims.

Not unusual in LM-land, though when it gets entered into the system it appears on the platform PIS. Perhaps Northern's PIS is not properly linked so this kind of change to the timetable doesn't make it onto there unless someone enters it.

My pet hate is the 17:30 Norwich-Liv St. which stops unusually at Stowmarket but NOT Manningtree. Keep telling myself but by the time I slow down for the 70mph by the estuary I've gone blonde. Decent/awake guards have given me a swift buzz-buzz but I did once stop & had to be despatched costing us 4mins. Buggers in Control had a good laugh & didnt let me forget in a hurry

1Y98 Liv St to Ips, catches us out sometimes, think its the only 1Yxx that does not stop Manningtree, (sadly we have no guard to go buzz buzz !)

Sunday is the only day of the week that the Bedford Thameslinks do not call at Preston Park. However, the only time I've had the need to catch one, we made the stop anyway. The PIS had already announced that we were next stop Brighton and so the people waiting by the doors got out and were surprised to find we were at Preston..

I've had the opposite of described in the thread - waiting at Woking one Saturday afternoon in the aftermath of desruption - a train to Grafton (shortened doe to Engineering works forgot to stop! The manual PIS had an announcement shortly after that. I also know of a train that was scheduled to stop at Woking and went via the New Guildford Line via Cobham!

A non-standard stopping pattern can make life more difficult, even when driver and guard (where provided) have confirmed stops. Ultimately making an additional stop out of course will at most cost you a delay and then probably some laughter, whereas a fail to call or an overrun will be treated more seriously.

We have one route in particular with wildly varying stopping patterns and it's a widely considered to be asking for trouble.

I would be inclined to say yes but it can happen at anytime. The very rare calls on locals are often the most at risk for me & end up doing things like leaving the window down even in cold weather as an added reminder.
