I enjoyed Apocalyptica's "interlude" performance when Finland hosted the contest. I don't remember the rest of that year's performances because we were only watching ti as the basis for some alcohol-based shenanigans.

That was very good but ruined visually as they showed some average circus acts instead of attractive Finnish rockers <D

But you feel quite happy insulting something you've not seen for years (and everyone in this thread)?

Given over the years there have been songs in most genres in Eurovision from one country or another that's quite a sweeping criticism.

Cheers. I'll quite happily indulge in a bit of fun every now and then though. If you want to miss out that's your choice.

Personally I've little interest in the sporting championships that take up so much TV time - but I'm not going to insult the maturity of anyone who might enjoy them.

Spot on. That was the thrust of my earlier post stating that a lot of people enjoy it so I'm not going to knock it too much. The same goes for other things I don't enjoy, such as snooker, horse racing, soaps, dancing etc etc!

The thing that most suprised me about it was that the bookies had it as 5th favourite.

Bookies always do this. For example, I am sure people bet on England in the football all the time, even though we never stand a chance. Thus the bookies are always happy to take our money, but not take too much risk by offering good odds.

I'm sure people also bet on their own team in football and other sports, even if the idea of gambling is to try and win, not use it as a show of support.

But you (ExRes) feel quite happy insulting something you've not seen for years (and everyone in this thread)?

Indeed. It's fun. Pure and simple.

Does anyone really care who won? No.
Will anyone demand a recount? No.
Will anyone stop watching to protest? No. Well, okay, maybe some - but their loss.

Many people will have had Eurovision parties and had fun with friends, with all the usual joking about the entries and the voting. And then it ends and life goes on.

It's also cheap TV (unless you're hosting it) in comparison to what the BBC would have to pay for other prime time TV entertainment on a Saturday.

Ok, i'll be the only one not allowed an opinion then, shall I ?

You're allowed an opinion. But if we think it's based on very little in the way of facts, by your own admission, we're allowed to criticise it.

Deal?

If you'd said "I watched the first half hour on Saturday and it was unadulterated tripe" I would still have had a different opinion, but more respect for yours.

Equally if you'd said "I have little interest in Eurovision so I didn't watch it", that's reasonable.

You don't like it, or watch it. But state an opinion that everyone who watches is in some way inferior and don't be surprised when people call you on it.

An opinion is something along the lines of 'I don't like it', which is fair enough.

You said you didn't know anything about and then proceeded to insult everyone who did watch it. That's not an opinion, it's just trying to be provocative and argumentative!

The whole thing is rather silly and just a bit of fun, not to be taken seriously. While it does not set new boundaries for even for run of the mill commercial music, the level of production technical expertise is very high. The lighting and camerawork approaches state of the art at times, as witnessed by this 2009 steadicam shot involving a segway scooter.

Also whilst I realise there's fewer live instruments going on than at the average gig it's a very impressive turnaround between acts (getting them off, sorting stuff out and getting the new act on while that short arty flag thing is on) compared to a typical 30-40 minute gap between acts at most gigs.

I have only seen a couple of the acts from this years' competition as I was out at the time it was on, though I saw the results.

I heard on the radio this morning something about the Polish entry being the top of the UK phone votes, that was overruled by the 5 strong panel. Then again, I may have misunderstood :P

No, those Pole dancers were very, er, impressive.

It was a half-decent song, but clearly more suitable for getting the artist a contract with a mainstream pop label than for winning Eurovision. And that's probably why the BBC picked it - they can't really afford to win because that would mean paying for the production of it the next year.

At least it wasn't such an obvious attempt to lose as the French :D

Forgot to add: it probably hurt the UK entry that they got drawn as the last act in the final. The whole continent would have been properly sloshed well before that point of the night.

I was sober enough to remember that act because in Australia the final gets delayed and shown on the Sunday evening, and I had to work the following morning. Obviously not everyone in this great land had that issue, because the Australian Unnofficial Eurovision Winner (rather more prestigious than the actual Eurovision win) this year ended up being Conchita.

I thought that was the best chance the French had had in years

I thought a good number of previous winners had been the last one on. Not sure where I can check that easily though.

A quick Google search reveals the last one (get it?) was 25 years ago (Yugoslavia winning in Lausanne, Switzerland).

To be honest I don't often watch Eurovision, but this year one of my friends said I 'had to watch it' and tbf it wasn't bad (it just wasn't great). Ukraine and Switzerland were quite catchy, but I wouldn't want any of the songs on my generic mp3 player.

Incidentally (going back to the op), in the semi final, the British commentators (Scott Mills and...erm...someone else) mentioned 'not doing this at home' when the Ukraine 'postcard' was shown.

Cheers. Faulty memory syndrome again...

Although I often watch it I was surprised how much I got into it after finding myself in Copenahgen at the same time as the 1st semifinal.

Good on that man :) I missed the commentary as I saw the first semifinal in Denmark and the second online.

As someone with a degree in video production, I have to say I cringed every time they switched to a close-up of the singer with the microphone covering half of his/her face. If the stand were three inches lower, it would have been a beautiful shot.

The same thing happened last year (my first Eurovision, so can't comment on any earlier ones), so it's definitely intentional.

Ah, you obviously looked upon it with a bit more knowledge than me.

All I remember is facial hair and the desire to eat butter.

I thought the standard of music this year was higher than previous years. Ukraine, Norway, Armenia and us all seemed to have tracks that wouldn't be too out of place in the midpoint of the singles chart.

Midpoint? If they can sell more than 10 copies these days, they go straight in at number one don't they?!

Were you that cynical before you lived in Hatfield or did it happen because of living in Hatfield?

Haha, good question. I think my job has been responsible for most of my cynicism over the years, but Hatfield definitely plays a part!

It wasn't just Britain but also Ireland and a couple of others that went for Poland from the audience poll :p

I'm sure the singer was the main attraction and not the "busty blondes" performing various chores in a "bouncy" manner to accompany the artist.

Butter churning has taken on a whole new dimension :p
