I was somewhat surprised to find I've been sold First Class advances for EMR with no seat reservations.

Wondering where my best bet at trying to sit is.

We're on the 1100 from Sheffield to Leicester today and the 1046 from Leicester to London tomorrow (normally I'd go direct from Leeds to London but with Kings Cross closed for the weekend, extended travel times and low frequencies we're not risking being late for tomorrow's Eurostar with the bonus of seeing relatives).

EMR doesn't always issue 'real' reservations for their Intercity trains, partly due to the forthcoming changeover to the new class 810 Aurora rolling stock. This is the case whether you are travelling in standard or first class.

So I would just sit in any empty seat, they should all be unreserved if you were issued with a 'counted place' reservation.

We didn't have trouble finding seats at Sheffield, but some were standing from Derby.

Wondering if there was any point booking First from Leicester.

If you find tomorrow that you have to stand for the duration of your journey and cannot occupy a First Class seat, the EMR Seat Guarantee allows you to obtain the full cost of your First Advance ticket back in compensation which I’ve done previously by emailing EMR Customer Services with explanation and copy of ticket.
