I recently travelled with TPE from Newcastle to Leeds.

I actually had a seat allocation in carriage B, with a table as requested, but not by the window, so I wasn't too keen on that idea (I had assumed the train would have been busy, as I got my £1 in the recent sale)

I waited for the train to arrive (coming in late from Liverpool) so as it turned out I was standing near the front of the train, so near carriage D, rather than B. No sign was visible, so I asked a fellow passenger whether this was carriage B. She replied, no, it was carriage D, the unreserved carriage .. she added, she always sat here as it's usually pretty empty. She was right .. for our journey, there were only 5 people, at least until it arrived at York.

My question .. is carriage D always unreserved ?

I am travelling with a friend to Berwick in a couple of weeks .. I booked the tickets and asked for table seats .. we got these .. just at different tables. If carriage D is always unreserved, we can go there

Carriage D is indeed always unreserved on these trains.

IIRC on the busiest services part of the carriage can be reserved, but this will always be last to be filled.

The TPE seat booking system is awful. Was talking to a TPE guard who was telling me about how they recently had a case of a mother and young child being sat completely separately on a busy train as the system had allocated the adult & child to sit apart.
We've got seats booked for 4 people on the 0707 ex Newcastle tomorrow. I can't imagine it'll be busy but 3 of us are around one table and the fourth is sat at another

Hilariously I'm currently on the 0707 ex-Newcastle...

There are a couple of reservations in D - so this seems to be quite a popular train.
