Unreservable Stansted Express

A paper ticket won't show a specific StanEx service (paper ticket should be the only option anyway as there is a cross London connection). I've done this a number of times on Chiltern+Connections tickets to SSD and picked whatever StanEx service was convenient.

From an old thread, is it the still the case that a paper ticket allows you to not follow the itinerary that the online booking process suggested?

Also can paper tickets be amended only if they are uncollected ?

As far as I am aware, all the Stansted Express services are unreserveable. An unreserveable train won't be listed on a paper Advance ticket.

Nothing prevents a ticket being amended after being collected, but every retailer has different processes. Trainline will require you to post them your ticket, while others will allow you to take a photo of it cut in half.

If you want to be certain your Stansted Express train won't show on your ticket, see if you can see reservation info anywhere you buy it from.

If you use the forum's site, you can view the details of a train, which will include information where reservations are available (or omit this information when they are not available).

For what it's worth, the forum's site will allow you to amend a collected ticket provided you upload a photo of the original ticket and show it voided (cut in two). £5 admin fee applies per booking reference. Other retailers, such as Thameslink/Southern's sites and TicketyBoo offer fee-free amendments for paper tickets.

Thank you for such a useful and detailed reply.

In the scenario where I arrive by plane at Stansted and am stuck in the passport queue 10 mins before departure of the train, is it ok to book a replacement journey online and sort out the “cutting in two” thing later?

Also, have there been examples on the forum of a passenger being challenged for taking the wrong unreservable train on an eticket which would not have been a problem on a paper ticket?

Paper tickets do not give additional validity; it's just that the suggested service may be less immediately obvious with one

If you want to be able to change your booked departure time at short notice, you should definitely get an e-ticket, as I believe you would be expected to cut up the ticket before the originally booked time.

I can't answer the question as to how strict the rules are, though I imagine there may be a possibility to show some form of discretion under certain circumstances, but retailers are subject to RDG inspections to ensure they are enforcing the rules...

As I can see you've picked up on something I said, I can clarify what I meant. The ticket format does not alter validity, I didn't mean to imply that. It does change what you hold in your hand that any railway staff member may need to inspect and interpret. The non-reservable nature of the Stansted Express service is what confers this flexibility even on an advance.

Not all barrier staff are well trained, some make up rules, those at Stansted Airport are known to be particularly bloodthirsty, and I remember at least at the time of your previous thread we were seeing "Mandatory Reservations" stated on Advance Single e-tickets when in fact not all of those reservations were mandatory.

I think the format struggled to mix and match the "Mandatory reservations" bit and the "Optional reservations" bit for "& connections" tickets. I don't know if that remains the case as I still buy paper tickets, for various reasons.

My point here was that paper tickets have a more concise and efficient provision of reservation information, so provide a crisper clear statement of mandatory reservations, not even stating a suggestion for the connecting service. It may be my healthy sense of paranoia but it gives a poorly trained barrier staff member less opportunity to misinterpret what I hold and prevent me from getting on with my journey within my rights.

This differs to the previous thread:

Stansted Express trains are non-reservable, however the conditions for Advance tickets require you to follow the exact booked itinerary where you have one, even for trains where you have no reservation

Greater Anglia offers "Advance" fares for the Stansted Express between London/Tottenham Hale and Stansted which are as described, valid on any train that day.

The name should probably be changed to something like "Flex" to avoid confusion.

Advance fares that are fixed to a specific itinerary should probably be called "Fixed" (as is the case with Lumo).

Advance fares that include connecting services are typically valid on appropriate alternative connecting services, where these are non reservable, and/or if an easement exists.
