There are references made in various threads to unpublished restrictions for specific tickets/restriction codes.

Can anyone clarify what 'unpublished restrictions' are? They must have been published in some place for some to be aware of their existence but, if they are not included in the published information for a specific code, what status do they have?

Look in the detailed fare information, for example at https://www.brfares.com/!faredetail?orig=EUS&dest=WML&expert=on&flow=0&multi=0&fare=7&tkt=SVR

UNPUBLISHED RESTRICTIONS
Intended for use by computerised journey planners and online booking systems.
To determine whether a journey is permitted, the time restrictions shown below are applied to:
  • The origin and destination of the journey
  • All locations where a passenger changes trains during a journey
  • The final destination of all trains travelled on during a journey
(whether or not the passenger is travelling to that final destination)
Note that these data can not be used to determine time restrictions when breaking and
resuming a journey at an intermediate station.

People are generally referring to the restrictions in the electronic data that retailers must use when determining valid routes and fares. These often differ from what the text of a restriction says, or occasionally what the maps or written easements of the Routeing Guide show.

Sometimes these are incorrectly coded, and at variance with the published restrictions, in my case above the 9I restriction code. In which case it may be impossible to get a valid ticket issued through systems which use the unpublished restrictions such as on-line retailers. Maybe this happens too frequently. The published restrictions should be the ones passengers can interpret and rely upon.
