Does anyone know what the X sign below the signal is for/means? it is on the signal that leads out of the stabling line southbound nearest to platform 4 at Carlisle Citadel station. If it helps there is the same X sign on the SPT post (no pic of this).

It means do not use the signal post telephone to contact the signaller except in an emergency as there is not enough clearance to allow you to use it safely by adjacent lines.

I thought that was what the limited clearance checkers on the SPT door were for!?!?!?

They mean exactly the same thing. You can also get yellow diamonds with a cross instead of white with a cross that mean the same, as does a yellow dot on black and white diagonal lines. They all mean do not use the SPT/lineside phone except in an emergency or if you've been specifically advised it is safe to do so, cabside radio/NRN/GSM-R etc should be used instead.
