Hi all,

On the 8th of November I will be hosting a Quiz Night at my University.

If possible, could I ask for a few volunteers to have a quick go at some of the questions I have prepared so that I can have some qualitative feedback in time for the event please? You don't have to attempt all 40 questions by any means, although I would hope that - between everyone who agrees to this - every question (well, maybe not Q36, because it's specific to Bath) would be attempted at least once.

If anyone is able to meet this request, my deepest gratitude to you in advance. For the record, I have not posted this in the Quiz Forum because (a) it will gain more attention here and (b) it isn't actually for this site. Staff/Quizmasters: If there is any issue with this, please let me know!

Of the ones you tried, the only ones you got wrong are 20, 22 (think about it ), 23, 28 and 30. Also, 29 is strictly correct, but not really sufficient. Sorry I've taken 15 minutes to respond!

Good effort though, and I would hope that if someone your age can get a decent amount, then a bunch of students can - but then again, this is Bath Spa

Good set of questions - some easy to keep everyone interested and some not so easy to challenge everyone. I knew about half to two thirds off the top of my head.

I'd have round 4 first so that the question number matches the question or (presumbaly what you're doing on the night) restart the numbering for each round!

If you're giving teams "jokers" to double their points on a round then you need to make sure that all the rounds score the same points so multi-answer questions (eg name the Eggheads) need all answers to score a point. I've been to no end of quizzes where failiure to do this has led to big rows (some people take these things too seriously, especially where there's a cash prize!) and it's no fun being the question setter when people start having a pop. From bitter experience.

It might be useful to have a tie break question with a numerical answer where the nearest wins. Something like "what was the crowd last Saturday for Cowdenbeath v Elgin?" Unless you're really unlucky, that will produce a result!

I'm loving the variety of answers people are providing for the Australian Grand Prix. Of those who are not correct, the answers provided are of the kind of standard that would leave Bernie Ecclestone in hot water (as happened in real life!)

A fair point. Whilst it is true that our Students' Union building has a poor phone signal, it is not useless - and I have known people to cheat like that in Quiz nights before now (my mother's friend once texted ex- Charlton Athletic player Radoslav Kishishev of Bulgaria, then of Leicester City, asking what the capital city of Bulgaria was! - it's Sofia ).

That to me is about right. As much as I would like things to be rock-hard from the off, it wouldn't go down very well if everyone scores 2!

I hadn't intended to, because I don't think the quiz is long enough to justify it. For the record though, all question criteria must be met to achieve the solitary point available; i.e. three Eggheads must be provided for the point.

I hadn't thought of that; a good suggestion. It's just a case of making the answer as suitable for the scenario as possible, e.g. "Rounded down to the nearest mile, how far is it from Bath Spa station to London Paddington station?" (106)

Re Q24: After further research in tennis grand slam winners, I have found the last British male to win a title was Jonathan Marray (Wimbledon mens' doubles, 2012).

This was news to me; I had managed to successfully ignore Wimbledon again this year.

I don't think a British male has ever won a professional Grand Slam singles before Murray. Wimbledon was strictly amateur until the late 60s (1968?). I'm less sure of the others. Was the US Open professional in 1936?

Also another hint for you if you are concerned about 'cheating'. Do one round as a quick-fire round where you will only read the question ONCE and once only, as soon as that question has been read out, give it about 10 seconds, then read the next question out

Wait 10 seconds
12. When was the Battle of Bosworth?
Qwait another 10 seconds

Wait another 10 seconds etc..)

You can change the amount of time between questions, but make sure it is a short amount of time and NEVER repeat the question, until you have to read the answers out

I have been recommended to revise Q34 to indicate the version of Monopoly, so the word "game" has been removed in favour of "standard London version". And as for Q24, I have revised "professional" to "senior". Is this adequate?

Ivo, I would advise dropping "senior" leaving just "Grand Slam singles", or specifying "Grand Slam Open singles". There are senior (and junior) age-restricted tournaments. Unless a question is phrased unambiguously to permit only one correct answer then it can lead to acrimony - I know, I've had arguments on both sides.
